The 2019-20 season is Sonam Phuntsok’s first year as Seattle U’s assistant tennis coach, and his second year with the program.
In the 2018-19 academic year, Phuntsok joined Seattle U tennis as a volunteer assistant coach. During that time, the women’s team posted four 7-0 sweeps on the season, while the men had one. Martina Asciuto was honored by the WAC as their Female Tennis Singles Athlete of the Week for Jan. 29-Feb. 4; on Feb. 12-18, Kali McCollister received the same award.
Phuntsok coached at the Team Tennis Academy in India from 2017-18 and spent over a year coaching at the John McEnroe Tennis Academy in New York in 2016-17, working with high performance players at both stops. Before that, he acted as the director of the Meadow Club of Southampton’s tennis team, and headed the tennis department at Camp Saginaw from 2013-2015.
In college, Phuntsok played tennis for the Lewis-Clark State Warriors. During his time there, he won the 2014 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Arthur Ashe Sportsmanship/Leadership National Award, and was team captain for the Warriors in his last two years. In his senior year, Phuntsok’s Warriors were ranked 10th in the NAIA and made it to the second round of the 2016 NAIA National Championships.
Phuntsok hails from Manali, India. Before attending college, he was ranked in the Top 50 U-18 and Top 100 Men tennis players in India; also ranked second overall in his state (Himachal Pradesh).
