PULLMAN, WASH. – Seattle U women's tennis headed out of town for the first time in 2020, taking on the Washington State Cougars on Saturday at the Simmelink Tennis Courts in Pullman, Wash. Unfortunately for the Redhawks, Washington State started off hot and did not let up all evening, landing a decisive 7-0 sweep and sending Seattle U to an 0-3 record.
In singles play, junior Hannah Gianan faced Washington State's Michaela Bayerlova, posting a final score of 1-6, 3-6. Fellow junior Kyra Jung, playing in the number two slot, lost to the Cougars' Hikaru Sato, 2-6, 1-6, and sophomore Jillian Rasmussen fell to Savanna Ly-Nguyen of Washington State, 1-6, 1-6. Freshman Jade Lancaster (0-6, 1-6) matched up against WSU's Melisa Ates, while sophomores Aranza Alvarez-Sanabria (0-6, 0-6) and Hannah Grossman (0-6, 0-6) were swept by the Cougars' Pang Jittakoat and Carla Quadflier, respectively.
Doubles play was no better for the Redhawks. Grossman and sophomore partner Martina Asciuto went up against Jittakoat and partner Jovana Knezevic, finishing at 1-6. Gianan and Rasmussen had similar results against Jittakoat and partner Jovana Knezevic, posting a score of 0-6, while the third match went unfinished due to Washington State clinching the doubles point.
"WSU came out guns blazing," said Assistant Coach Sonam Phuntsok. "They used their home court advantage well, and it was tough for us to get used to the new atmosphere. The only way to go from here is up."
Seattle U will have a chance to regroup on Jan. 24, when they travel to Eagle, Idaho, for a neutral-court matchup against Boise State. Play will begin at 5:00 p.m. PT.
