A New Era in Intercollegiate Athletics

Seattle University is back in the West Coast Conference – and at the forefront of a new era in intercollegiate athletics. In June 2025, the House Settlement received final approval, ushering in historic changes that include the elimination of scholarship limits and the ability for schools to directly engage in institutional Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) agreements. These shifts open the door for growth, innovation and new ways to support Redhawk student athletes.

Seattle University is ready to meet this moment – opting into the revenue-sharing model, a significant step that positions us to remain competitive, especially as we transition into the highly competitive West Coast Conference. Our NIL collective, Red White U, has been brought in-house, which allows donors to make tax-deductible donations, and allows Seattle University to enter NIL agreements directly with student athletes.

This is a pivotal time for our programs, and we need your partnership to ensure Redhawk student athletes have the resources they need to succeed at Seattle University. The next chapter starts now, and your support will help us write it.

What Is the House Settlement?

The House Settlement is a landmark agreement stemming from three major class-action lawsuits that is poised to fundamentally reshape college athletics. It introduces changes to how schools support and compensate student athletes, and Seattle University is preparing to meet this moment head-on. Here are the key elements of the settlement that will directly impact Seattle University:

Revenue Sharing

Beginning in the 2025-26 academic year, schools will be allowed to share up to 22% of the average annual revenue from media rights, ticket sales, and sponsorships with their student athletes. This could amount to $20.5 million in revenue-sharing opportunities starting next year for institutions at the Power Four conferences.

Back Damages

The settlement provides approximately $2.78 billion in back damages related to past Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) claims. These funds will be distributed over a 10-year period, with Division I schools collectively contributing around $280 million per year.

Elimination of Scholarship Limits

The settlement removes the longstanding cap on the number of scholarships a program can offer. Institutions can now provide scholarships to every student athlete on their roster. However, new roster size limits will be implemented to ensure competitive balance.

How does NIL work at Seattle University?

Seattle University’s Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) collective, Red White U, has officially moved in-house and is now operated through the Athletics Department as a dedicated gift fund. This strategic shift allows us to enter into NIL agreements with Redhawk student athletes, creating a more streamlined and compliant process. Student athletes can now receive more support beyond their scholarship, we now can offer financial support in exchange for their Name, Image and Likeness.
