SEATTLE – Saturday was a long day for Seattle U men's tennis, as they started off their season with an afternoon doubleheader against Washington at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.  Although there were a few close matches, the Redhawks were ultimately swept by the Huskies in both matches, posting identical scores of 0-7.

"The men played well in patches, but UW played more consistently," said Assistant Coach Sonam Phuntsok. "Regardless, there were lots of positives to take from today."

In the first team outing of the day, junior Colton Weeldreyer had the most balanced singles match for Seattle U, finishing with a score of 3-6, 3-6 against Washington's Jack Davis. Freshman Lars Schmassmann started out strong in his match against Kasper Smith of the Huskies, but ended up losing 4-6, 1-6; meanwhile, junior Emilio Monroy's own bout against Washington's Liam Puttergill started out much the same, but unfortunately finished in a similar matter at 4-6, 0-6. Senior Alex Chan, after starting off slow, found his rhythm against the Huskies' Jack Pulliam; unfortunately, it wasn't enough as the match ended 1-6, 4-6 in favor of Chan's opponent. Finally, senior Adrian Alvarez-Sanabria (1-6, 0-6) took on Brandon Wong of Washington while classmate Trenton Nield (0-6, 0-6) had his own battle against the Huskies' Ewen Lumsden.

The Redhawks fared no better in doubles play. Weeldreyer and Monroy had the closest match, winning three games to Puttergill's and partner Adam Torocsik's six. Nield and Chan posted a final of 1-6 against the duo of Davis and Lumsden, while Alvarez-Sanabria and Schmassman fell 0-6 to Pulliam and partner Alexis Alvarez.

Seattle U showed improvement in their second attempt against Washington. In singles play, Schmassmann fought Alvarez tooth and nail the entire way, ending with a final score of 6-7 (2-7), 1-6. Alvarez-Sanabria bounced back from his previous match and posted a 3-6, 4-6 effor against Pulliam, while sophomore Juan Pablo Jaramillo (2-6, 3-6) made his spring Seattle U debut against Kailuhia Lam of Washington. Weeldreyer stayed balanced against Lumsden with a 2-6, 1-6 effort, Nield (2-6, 0-6) started off strong against Davis, and Chan made a valiant effort at a comeback against Wong, finishing 0-6, 2-6.

Chan and Nield teamed up once again for doubles, this time facing Alvarez and Lam in a 2-6 result. Sophomore Billy Givens-Jensen, in tandem with Weeldreyer, took on Davis and Lumsden, finishing 1-6. Finally, Alvarez-Sanabria and Schmassmann fought hard in a 1-6 final against Smith and Wong.

The Redhawks will have the week off before heading to Cheney, Wash., to face Eastern Washington on Sunday, Jan. 19. Play will begin at 10:00 a.m.
