Sophomore Martina Asciuto, together with classmate Hannah Grossman, posted a doubles win against the Eagles.

SEATTLE – Seattle U women's tennis started off its season against Eastern Washington on Friday at the Amy Yee Tennis Center, beginning a long four months of play before the Western Athletic Conference Championships. Although there were plenty of positives to take away from the match, Seattle U came up just short, losing to the Eagles, 2-5.

Freshman Jade Lancaster won her first match in collegiate dual play, finishing off Renata Gabuzyan of Eastern Washington with a 6-2, 7-5 score. Sophomore Alisa Sabotic also won her match, defeating the Eagles' Stephanie Broussard 6-3, 4-6, 10-3. Meanwhile, junior Hannah Gianan lasted for three sets in her own match, losing a 4-6, 6-4, 8-10 heartbreaker to Eastern Washington's Rylee Braeden. Senior Peggy Rooke and sophomore Jillian Rasmussen also came up just short against their opponents from across the state, finishing 4-6, 2-6 against Zoey Nelson and 3-6, 3-6 against Yasmin Mansouri, respectively. Finally, junior Kyra Jung posted a two-set score of 2-6, 3-6 against Louise Waite of the Eagles.

In doubles play, sophomores Martina Asciuto and Hannah Grossman teamed up against Gabuzyan and Marta Heinen of Eastern Washington, earning the victory after a tough 7-6 (7-3) battle. Theirs was the only victory for Seattle U doubles, as Gianan and Rasmussen lost to the duo of Nelson and Braeden, 2-6, while Rooke and Lancaster posted a final score of 2-6 against Waite and Mansouri.

"The women fought well overall," said Assistant Coach Sonam Phuntsok. "There was some first-match rust, and though we started off well in singles, we just couldn't keep the momentum up. We will learn from this and move on to the next one."

Next, Seattle U heads to the Lloyd Nordstrom Tennis Center on the University of Washington's campus on Sunday, Jan. 12, to take on the No. 13 Washington Huskies. Play will begin at 3:00 p.m.
