Seattle University men’s tennis opened up the 2013-14 season at the EWU Classic at Eastern Washington University in Cheney, Wash.
In Flight 1, Kevin Lynch (Colorado Springs, Colo.) was defeated by Idaho’s Christobal Ramos, 7-5, 6-3, and Zack Kosanke (Bellevue, Wash.) was defeated by Andrew Warren, 6-3, 6-1.
In the Flight 1 consolation bracket, Lynch advanced to Saturday’s semifinals by defeating Montana’s Mikolai Caruk, 6-4, 6-4, 7-6, in the first round and advancing through the quarterfinals on a bye. In the same bracket, Kosanke was defeated by Idaho’s Cesar Torres due to injury.
In Flight 2, Ian Clare (Sachse, Texas) defeated Montana State’s Javier Martin-Morillas, 6-3, 6-1, 1-0 (9) in the round of 16 before falling to Gonzaga’s Jack Schoebel in the quarterfinals, 6-3, 7-5. Similarly, Riley Newman (Whidbey Island, Wash.) defeated Lewis-Clark State’s Haseeb Khan, 7-6 (4), 7-5, before falling to Idaho’s Andrew Zedde, 7-5, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.
In Flight 3, Connor Leahy (Portland, Ore.) advanced to Saturday’s quarterfinal round on a round of 32 bye and after defeating Lewis-Clark State’s Jeff Su, 7-6 (3), 6-4. Jason Bediones (Kent, Wash.) also advanced to the quarterfinals on a first round bye and by defeating Gonzaga’s Muzeen Ismath, 7-5, 6-1. Brandon Schneider (Dubuque, Iowa) defeated Lewis-Clark State’s Anthony Croteau, 6-0, 6-1, in the first round but was defeated in the round of 16 by Eastern Washington’s Luke Ness, 7-5, 6-2. Gus Orlando (Sacramento, Calif.) fell in the first round to Portland’s Alex Wallace, 6-3, 6-4, 1-0 (6).
In the Flight 3 consolation bracket, Orlando will compete in Saturday’s quarterfinals after byes in the first two rounds.
In doubles play, in the Red Flight, Kosanke/Clare and Lynch/Bediones both advanced to the quarterfinal round. Kosanke/Clare advanced on a bye and Lynch/Bediones advanced by defeating Lewis-Clark State’s Andrew Bustanti/Sonam Phuntsok, 8-6.
In White Flight doubles, Newman/Leahy defeated Eastern Washington’s Aaron Lince/Matt Boyle, 8-1, advancing to the quarterfinals. In the same bracket, Orlando/Schneider were defeated by Montana State’s Javier Martin-Morrillas/Kenny Dodd, 8-2, moving to the consolation bracket.
The team continues play at the EWU Classic on Saturday, Sept. 28 and Sunday, Sept. 29.
