Punctuated by a school record in the 4x400 meter relay, the Seattle University women's track and field team finished sixth at the Great West Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, but a couple of mistakes cost the men's team as it finished in eighth place Saturday at the DakotaDome.

The team of Meeghan Bergmann (Portland, Ore.), Clare Obradovich (Tigard, Ore.), Elena Collins (Eugene, Ore.), and Rachel Purcell (Mission Viejo, Calif.) finished fifth in the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:03.56, breaking the old mark of 4:04.11 set at the 2009 UW Invitational. The women finished sixth overall with 14.5 points, with South Dakota earning the conference championship over Utah Valley.

Courtney Cabebe (Kihei, Hawaii) picked up points for the Seattle University women in the pole vault, clearing a height of 2.70 meters (8' 10.25") for a seventh place finish. Also in field events, Amanda Luna (Beavercreek, Ore.) finished 11th in the triple jump with a top effort of 10.11 meters (33' 2"), while Becca Urbany (Damascus, Ore.) finished in 13th place with a leap of 9.96 meters (32' 8.25").

On the men's side, Zach Stanfield (Adna, Wash.) finished third in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.31 seconds and sixth in the 60 meter dash in 7.04 seconds. Chris Stephens (Seattle, Wash.) finished third in the 400 meter dash by posting a time of 50.25 seconds.

Hans Heitzinger (Scottsdale, Ariz.) also picked up a point for the SeattleU men, finishing eighth in the 5000 meter run with a time of 15:32.18. Michael Van Nuland (Newcastle, Wash.) finished tenth in that event in 15:46.41. In the men's one mile run, Nicholas Alvarado (San Francisco, Calif.) finished in ninth place in 4:31.61, followed by Kelton Sears (Maple Valley, Wash.) in 12th place in 4:33.80 and Chris Auld (Eugene, Ore.) in 14th place in 4:38.68.

Dan Auld (Eugene, Ore.) was the team's top finisher in the 800 meter run, finishing in 15th place overall with a time of 2:01.62. His brother Chris finished 18th overall in 2:06.62, followed by Sears in 19th place with a time of 2:08.31.

Tom Mezzera (San Francisco, Calif.) was disqualified from the 400 meter dash for a lane violation, while the 4x400 meter relay team of Stanfield, Mezzera, Daniel Sullivan (Tukwila, Wash.), and Stephens was disqualified for impeding the progress of other runners. With those two solid finishes nullified, the men's team finished eighth overall with 27 points, as South Dakota also took the men's team title with Utah Valley finishing in second place.

In the women's distance events, Greta Stickney (Poulsbo, Wash.) finished in ninth place in the 5000 meter run with a time of 18:59.04, followed by Lauren Hammerle (Seattle, Wash.) in 11th place in 19:04.40 and Rachel Yorkston (Bellingham, Wash.) in 13th place in 19:20.06. Sarah Bolce (Sacramento, Calif.) just missed the top eight in the one mile run, finishing in ninth place in 5:23.43.

Freshman Jennifer Stolle (Seattle, Wash.) pulled double duty during the session, first finishing in 13th place in the mile in 5:32.26. Stolle then competed in the 800 meter run, finishing 15th overall with a time of 2:31.78.

The Seattle University track and field team will now begin to prepare for the outdoor season, with the first competition scheduled to be the Oregon Preview Saturday, March 20, at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
