SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Seattle University softball (5-8) dropped their first contest of the day, 12-6, to Idaho State (4-7) before topping the home team, 6-4, in the night cap in Santa Clara (3-11).

“It was great to come away with the win tonight,” said head coach Dan Powers. “We had significant leads in both games on the day but couldn’t finish with defensive strength in the first to finish the game. Mandie (Sugita) had another quality start versus Santa Clara and Bubba (Morrow) lifted the team with her towering shot. We’re looking to build on our momentum versus a very good San Jose State team tomorrow.”

The Redhawks close the weekend with a rematch from earlier this season vs. San Jose State at 1:30 pm PT.

Idaho State 12, Seattle U 6

Idaho State scored two runs in the top of the first before the Redhawks took a 6-2 lead in the bottom of the frame. The Redhawks would get off to a strong offensive start but all six of their runs would come in the first inning of play.

Savannah Loomis (Roseville, Calif.) drove home Isabella Geronimo (San Mateo, Calif.) for the first run before Paige Bouska (Keizer, Ore.) and Bubba Morrow (Auburn, Wash.) scored on back-to-back bases loaded walks. The next Redhawk hitter, Molly Campbell (San Diego, Calif.) singled to right field to bring home Breanna Timmons (Santa Maria, Calif.) and Loomis before Lisa Maulden (Maple Valley, Wash.) ran home on a double to right field by Maddy Kristjanson (Mountlake Terrace, Wash.).

Seattle U left runners on first and second in the second and third innings, respectively, but neither team added to their tally until the top of the fourth as the Bengals added a single run on an RBI single form Katelyn Marquez.

The Redhawks still up, 6-3, ISU regained the lead with big fifth and seventh innings, adding five in the fifth and four more in the top of the seventh.

In the top of the fifth, the Bengals’ Vicky Galasso opened the inning with a one-out solo home run to left center. ISU loading the bases, Maddy Hickman hit a 3RBI double to right center to drive all three home. Two at bats and an out later, Kacie Burnett would put Idaho State up, 8-6, with a RBI single to third base.

The Bengals tacked on four more runs in the seventh on a pair of RBI singles from Marquez and Sarah Hayes before a pair of sacrifice outs, which would drive home the final two runs.

Morrow led Seattle U at the plate (2-for-2), adding a run, while Loomis hit 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.

In the circle, Alyssa Reuble (Lynnwood, Wash.) allowed eight runs on 10 hits while walking two and Lindsay Davis (Palo Cedro, Calif.) entered in relief allowing four runs on five hits while walking two. Bailey Foster earned the win in relief for Idaho State giving up just six hits while walking and striking out two in 6 2/3 innings pitched.

Seattle U 6, Santa Clara 4

The Redhawks took a 3-0 lead through the first two innings on a 2RBI double to right center by Kayla Shuster-Gonzales (Escondido, Calif.) in the first and an RBI single through the right side from Bouska in the second. Further Redhawk scoring would be cut short as two runners apiece in the two innings would be stranded on base.

The Broncos got on the board in the bottom of the third on an unearned run off a Seattle U error, but Seattle U, leading 3-1, tacked on three more runs in the top of the fourth on a 3RBI home run to left field from Morrow, batting home Bouska and Geronimo.

Santa Clara added a run on a Jordan Newell single in the sixth and two more in the seventh on a 2RBI home run to left field from Geenamarie Bonilla, but the Redhawks would maintain the lead for a 6-4 win.

Morrow led the Redhawks at the plate in game two on the day, batting 2-for-3 with a pair of runs, three RBI, and a home run.

In the circle, Mandie Sugita (Rossmoor, Calif.) earned the win in the six inning start, giving up two runs on six hits while walking four and striking out one. Davis entered in relief allowing two runs on three hits. Briana Rios  was handed the loss in the start for Santa Clara, allowing three runs on three hits while walking three and striking out one in the two inning outing.
