At the UW Open, Seattle University’s indoor track and field team set three more school records to close out the season before heading to the Great West Conference Championships. 

Emily Walters (Olympia, Wash.) set her third record of the weekend in the long jump with a new distance of 5.27m (17-03.05), smashing the previous record of 4.79m.  Just behind her, who had also broken the old record earlier in the day, was Katie Tougas (Edmonds, Wash.) with a leap of 5.23m (17-02.00).  Becca Urbany (Damascus, Ore.) also competed in the long jump with a distance of 4.48m (14-08.05), and also jumped a distance of 10.00m (32-09.75) in the triple jump.

The second record on the women’s side came in the form of the 4x400 meter relay, run by Rachel Purcell (Mission Viejo, Calif.), Meeghan Bergmann (Portland, Ore.), Walters, and Clare Obradovich (Tigard, Ore.) in 4:02.15, passing the old record by 1.41 seconds.

Alyssa Lout (Tempe, Ariz.) finished the 200 meter dash in 26.69, just .13 off the school record, and Purcell came in behind her with a time of 26.93, followed by Bergmann in 27.50.  In the 400 meter dash, Noelle Marchesini (Gig Harbor, Wash.) finished in 1:02.36, and Mary Thompson (Simi Valley, Calif.) competed in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:23.50. Celeste Cassidy (Bellingham, Wash.) and Jennifer Stolle (Seattle, Wash.) both competed in the one mile run, finishing in 5:09.83 and 5:23.44 respectively.

Ariel Johnson (Moscow, Idaho) came close to her recent school record in the pole vault with a leap of 3.35 meters. Bethany Richards (Shoreline, Wash.) putted the shot 10.41 meters and tossed the weight throw 11.04 meters, while Emee Mathew (Redmond, Wash.) threw the shot put 10.37 meters and Sara Blakely (Spokane, Wash.) threw the weight throw 9.86 meters.

Ty Jaros (Eugene, Ore.) set a new school record in the triple jump with a distance of 13.50m (44-03.50). He also competed in the high jump with a height of 1.73m (5-00.08). Stephen Squatrito (Phoenix, Ariz.) competed in the long jump with a leap of 5.47m (17-11.50).

In the 3000 meter run, both Kevin Kopetz (Derry, N.H.) and Graham Kinzel-Grubbs (Portland, Ore.) set season personal records. Kopetz finished in 9:08.73 and Kinzel-Grubbs in 9:11.89. In the one mile run, Peter VanNuland (Newcastle, Wash.) finished in 4:29.41, and Keenan Clinch (Sammamish, Wash.) finished the 800 meter run in 2:01.28.

Samuel Engle (Portland, Ore.) cleared the 60m hurdles in 9.62, and in the 60 meter dash Taylor Fitch (Seattle, Wash.) finished in 7.25, followed by Jude Martinez (Hagatna, Guam) in 7.43. Zachary Schlachter (Tigard, Ore.) came in highest for the Redhawks in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.93. Fitch came in behind him in 23.19, followed by Cooper Hartman (Silverdale, Wash.) in 23.65, Christopher Fussell (Las Vegas, Nev.) in 23.66, and Squatrito in 24.32. In the 400 meter dash, Zach Stanfield (Adna, Wash.) crossed the line in 49.51.

Josh Walters (Sacramento, Calif.) threw the shot put 10.95 meters (35-11.25) and weight throw 11.68 meters (38-04.00), and Brandan Haggarty (Missoula, Mont.) tossed the weight throw a distance of 11.59 meters.

The men’s 4x400 meter relay, made up of Martinez, Eric Patterson-Floyd (Seattle, Wash.), Hartman, and Engle, finished in 3.28.56.

“We had another successful meet today and a fantastic weekend overall for our team!” said head coach Trisha Steidl. “The past three days show that we have a good, confident mentality and that we are in a strong place as a team. If we bring it to the conference meet like we did this weekend, we’re going to do very well.”

The GWC Championships will be held in New York, N.Y. on Feb. 27-28.
