SEATTLE – Seattle U cross country starts their 2019 season with a bang on Friday morning as they take on the University of Washington in the UW-Seattle U Open at Magnuson Park. The women’s three-mile race starts at 11:00 a.m., while the men will run the four-mile course at 11:45.

Washington’s men’s and women’s squads are both ranked third in the nation by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Association (USTFCCCA).

“It’ll be a true test for sure,” said Head Coach Kelly Sullivan. “It’s great to have everyone back and get 2019 underway. We have great energy and optimism on both sides. Tomorrow is about getting some of the runners started, while the rest are slated to begin competition in two weeks.”

This past offseason, the women’s team added four talented freshmen in Delaney Griffin, Emily Harris, Maya McCabe and Grace Much. Both Harris and McCabe competed in the USA Track and Field (USATF) Junior Olympics in high school, while Much was a four-year member of the First Team All-Northwest Conference and Griffin owns several school records, along with making Oregon’s All-State Second Team in 2018.

The men’s new additions include graduate student Andrew Ayers, transfer junior Hamza Ali and freshmen Jay Grant, Gus Harquail and Lance Mason. Ayers spent his undergraduate years at Lipscomb University, qualifying for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) South Region Cross Country Championships in 2016. Ali competed at the World U20 Cross Country Championships in 2017 as a representative of the United States, while Grant, Harquail, and Mason were all standouts in their respective high school conferences.
