The Seattle University baseball team kicked off its annual fall Black and Scarlet Series at Lower Woodland Park last Saturday, Oct. 11, with the Black Team earning the victory in game one, 4-2.
After Skyler Genger (Kent, Wash.) worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning, the Black team struck first in the second, starting when Michael McCann (Vancouver, Wash.) walked, stole second base, and came around to score on a single by Dalton Hurd (Bend, Ore.). Hurd and TJ Byrne (Federal Way, Wash.) both scored on wild pitches later in the inning to give the Black team a 3-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, the Black team added to its lead when Anthony Gosline (Spokane, Wash.) singled, stole second base, and scored on a single by Byrne, named the player of the game. The Scarlet team answered in the fifth inning when Grant Newton (Bend, Ore.) and Sean Sutton (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho) each drove in a run, but Jack Reisinger (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) kept the Black team ahead by two runs when he threw out Landon Cray (Chimacum, Wash.) at the plate on Cash McGuire's (Kent, Wash.) single.
Genger struck out six and gave up just two hits in four innings of work, while relievers Grant Gunning (Snohomish, Wash.) and Garrett Anderson (Kennewick, Wash.) combined to hold the Scarlet team scoreless over the final three innings. Cray, McGuire, and Newton each earned two hits for the Scarlet team, with Hurd leading the Black team with two hits.
The second game of the Black and Scarlet Series will take place Saturday, Oct. 18, starting at 12 noon, followed by the third and final game Sunday, Oct. 19, beginning at 11 a.m., both at Meridian Park, located at 1900 North 170th Street in Shoreline.
