Shaddye Melu (Auburn, Wash.) broke the school record in the high jump he set just two weeks ago as the Seattle University track and field team continued participation at the Husky Classic Saturday at Dempsey Indoor.
After needing all three attempts to clear 1.93 meters and two attempts to clear 1.98 meters, Melu successfully leaped over the bar on his second attempt at 2.03 meters (6' 8"). Melu would finish first in his flight and tied for third overall in the event.
On the track, Zach Stanfield (Adna, Wash.) came close to a school record for the second straight day, finishing third in the first 400 meter dash invitational heat with a time of 49.05 seconds, only 57/100ths off the current school record.
Zachary Schlachter (Tigard, Ore.) finished the regular 400 meter dash heats with the best time among the Redhawks at 50.36 seconds, ahead of Austin Thummel-Gravitt (Puyallup, Wash.) at 50.46 seconds, Samuel Engle (Portland, Ore.) at 52.48 seconds, and Adeyinka Bello (La Mesa, Calif.) at 54.40 seconds. In the 60 meter dash, Eric Patterson-Floyd (Seattle, Wash.) posted a time of 7.22 seconds.
In the men's one mile run, Ryan Dennison (Pacifica, Calif.) finished fifth in his section with a time of 4:17.10, with Collin Overbay (Spokane, Wash.) right behind him in seventh place in 4:17.81 and Nathan McLaughlin (Puyallup, Wash.) crossing the finish line in 12th place in 4:21.16. Sophie Curatilo (Honolulu, Hawaii) led the way in the women's one mile run, finishing fourth in the section in 5:03.81, followed by Jennifer Stolle (Seattle, Wash.) in seventh place in 5:06.65.
Hannah Mittelstaedt (Maple Valley, Wash.) started the day with a sixth place finish in her section of the 3000 meter run with a time of 10:18.15, while Elena Smith (Seattle, Wash.) posted a time of 10:35.29. In the 800 meter run, Madison Davis (Camano Island, Wash.) crossed the finish line in sixth place in her heat in 2:18.37, and Becca Lassere (Boise, Idaho) posted a time of 2:25.11.
Candice de Sauvage (Foster City, Calif.) finished the 400 meter dash with a time of 59.84 seconds, while Meeghan Bergmann (Portland, Ore.) posted a mark of 60.56 seconds. Coming off a school-record performance in the 200 meter dash Friday night, Miriam Mboya (Shoreline, Wash.) finished the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.93 seconds, with Katie Tougas (Edmonds, Wash.) finishing in 7.99 seconds and Valerie Wu (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) posting a time of 8.43 seconds.
Tougas also competed in the long jump, finishing fourth in her flight with a top effort of 5.26 meters (17' 3.25"). Kaytie Bateman (Chehalis, Wash.) also competed in two events during the day, finishing the 60 meter hurdles in 9.64 seconds and clearing 1.48 meters (4' 10.25") in the high jump.
Also in the field events, Bo Anderson (Tacoma, Wash.) equaled his school record in the shot put with a throw of 14.22 meters (46' 8"), while Devon Walker (Ventura, Calif.) finished with a top throw of 12.86 meters (42' 2.25"). Bethany Richards (Shoreline, Wash.) posted a top effort of 10.99 meters (36' 0.75") in the women's shot put.
Several members of the Seattle University track and field team will take part in the UW Open Sunday, Feb. 10, at Dempsey Indoor starting at 9 a.m. The team will then prepare for the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., Feb. 21-23.
