In the first day of Great West Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships, Emily Walters (Olympia, Wash.) beat two of her own school records as the Seattle University indoor team kicked off competition at the New York Armory.
Walters won the long jump with a leap of 5.56 meters, beating her previous school record of 5.27 meters. She also finished tenth in the 60 meter hurdles preliminaries in 9.34, beating her own record of 9.41, and came in tenth in the high jump with a height of 1.50 meters. Also in the 60 meter hurdles was Kaytie Bateman (Chehalis, Wash.), who ran in 10.25, and then also competed in the high jump with a leap of 1.45 meters. Katie Tougas (Edmonds, Wash.) tied for 12th in the long jump with a distance of 4.84, and Bateman was behind her with a jump of 4.80 meters.
Also for the women, in the one mile preliminaries, Celeste Cassidy (Bellingham, Wash.) finished second in 5:10.99, followed by Sarah Bolce (Sacramento, Calif.) in fifth with a time of 5:11.24 and Jennifer Stolle (Seattle, Wash.) in 5.21.03. In the 400 meter dash prelims, Rachel Purcell (Mission Viejo, Calif.) finished in 59.48, followed by Clare Obradovich (Tigard, Ore.) in 1:00.31 and Meeghan Bergman (Portland, Ore.) in 1:00.55. In the 5000 meter run finals, Lauren Hammerle (Seattle, Wash.) placed fifth with a time of 18:00.98, and Hannah Mittelstaedt (Maple Valley, Wash.) came in ninth in 18:14.39.
Cara Talty (Raritan, N.J.), Bergmann, Mary Thompson (Simi Valley, Calif.), and Stolle all combined for a new school record in the fourth-place distance medley relay finals with a time of 12:31.08, beating the old record of 12:34.70.
On the men’s side, in the 400 meter preliminaries, Zach Stanfield (Adna, Wash.) came in third with a time of 49.72, and Zachary Schlachter (Tigard, Ore.) finished in 51.20, followed by Duncan MacKay (Renton, Wash.) in 52.35. Stanfield also finished seventh in the 60 meter dash preliminaries with a time of 7.03 and seventh in the 200 meter prelims with a time of 22.14. Schlachter finished the 200 meter dash in 22.82.
In the one mile prelims, Kelton Sears (Maple Valley, Wash.) came in ninth with a time of 4:22.42, followed by Chris Auld (Eugene, Ore.) in 4:25.48. Dan Auld (Eugene, Ore.) finished sixth in the 800 meter prelims in 1:57.85, and in the 5000 meter run finals, Erik Barkhaus (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) placed seventh in 15:23.75, Hans Heitzinger (Scottsdale, Ariz.) tenth in 15:30.01, Adam Kollgaard (Kent, Wash.) 11th in 15:31.73, and Michael Van Nuland (Newcastle, Wash.) 15th in 15:38.66. The distance medley relay team of Matthew McClement (Bellingham, Wash.), MacKay, Sears, and Auld, C. finished fifth with a time of 10:43.64.
In the field events, Ty Jaros (Eugene, Ore.) finished sixth in the long jump with a leap of 6.50 meters, and Josh Walters (Sacramento, Calif.) finished 11th in the weight throw with a distance of 11.98 meters.
The Redhawk women are sitting in sixth place with 19 points behind Houston Baptist’s 22.5. Utah Valley leads with 49 points. The men are seventh with nine points, and South Dakota is leading with 59.5.
The final day of competition will begin Monday, Feb. 28 at 10 am Eastern, 7 am Pacific.
