School records by Keenan Clinch (Sammamish, Wash.) and Ty Jaros (Eugene, Ore.), a solid performance by Zach Stanfield (Adna, Wash.), and several personal bests highlighted the opening of the 2010 indoor track and field season, as Seattle University competed at the UW Indoor Preview Saturday at Dempsey Indoor.

Clinch posted a time of 1:25.69 in the 600 meter run, about two seconds faster than the old mark of 1:27.6. Meanwhile, Stanfield advanced to the finals of the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.05 seconds, and then he posted a faster time in the finals, finishing seventh overall in 7.00 seconds. He also finished fifth overall in the 200 meter dash, winning his heat with a time of 22.49 seconds.

Jaros posted a school-record leap of 44' 2.5" (13.47 meters) in the triple jump, smashing the old mark but over a foot. Michael Cardinal (Lafayette, Colo.) made his collegiate debut in the 60 meter hurdles and the high jump, posting a time of 9.23 seconds in the hurdling event and clearing a height of 5' 9.25" (1.76 meters) in the high jump.

Tom Mezzera (San Francisco, Calif.) posted a solid time of 49.05 seconds in the 400 meter dash. Jude Martinez (Hagatna, Guam) anchored the 4x400 meter relay, joining Christopher Fussell (Las Vegas, Nev.), Stanfield, and Mezzera in winning their heat with a time of 3:26.06. Individually, Fussell just missed on reaching the 60 meter dash finals after running the preliminaries in 7.12 seconds, while Chris Stephens (Seattle, Wash.) finished the 200 meter dash in 23.08 seconds.

The distance runners, coming off a strong cross country season, posted several personal bests. Hans Heitzinger (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and Michael Van Nuland (Newcastle, Wash.) each earned personal bests in the 3000 meter run, with Heitzinger finishing in 8:53.23 and Van Nuland close behind with a time of 8:55.44. In that same event, Nicholas Alvarado (San Francisco, Calif.) came close to his personal best with a time of 8:54.61.

On the women's side, Greta Stickney (Poulsbo, Wash.) came close to her personal best in the 3000 meter run with a time of 10:55.35, remarkable in that she did not compete during last year's track season because she was on a study abroad program in France. Sarah Bolce (Sacramento, Calif.) first competed as part of the distance medley relay team, unofficially finishing the mile in 5:24, and then posted the team's top time in the 3000 meter run with a mark of 10:39.68.

"Overall I'm pleased with how the meet went today. It was the first meet of the season and no one is anywhere close to being at 100%. Despite that, some great marks were posted.  We're starting this season out in a much stronger place than we were at this time last year. If we can keep that momentum going and continue to build on these performances, we are going to have a great season, both indoors and outdoors," head coach Trisha Steidl said.

The Seattle University track and field team heads back to Dempsey Indoor in two weeks for the UW Invitational on Friday, Jan. 29, starting at 3 p.m., and Saturday, Jan. 30, beginning at 8 a.m.
