earned ten top-five finishes as the track and field teams competed at the 2008 GNAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships Saturday at Tomlinson Stadium.
competitors earned second place finishes in three different events. Freshman Rachael Johnson (, ) set a new school record in the 800 meter run, finishing second with a time of 2:15.10, while Mara Becker () tied for second in the high jump after clearing a height of 5’ 2.25”. The quartet of Daniel Sullivan (, ), Loyal Allen, Jr. (, ), Christopher Fussell (, ), and Travis Glover () placed second in the 4x100 meter relay in 42.24 seconds.
The four gentlemen also combined for a fourth place finish in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:21.2. Individually, Fussell finished third in the 100 meter dash in 11.04 seconds, ahead of Glover in fifth place in 11.22 seconds and Sullivan in sixth place in 11.24 seconds. Glover also finished in fifth place in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.43 seconds, while Sullivan earned a third place finish in the 400 meter hurdles in 54.46 seconds.
Following up on her solid performance in the 3000 meter run Friday night, Katie Hansen () finished third in the 5000 meter run with a time of 17:49.63. Rachel Purcell (, ) finished sixth in the 400 meter dash in 59.44 seconds, then joined Elizabeth Wolf (Albuquerque, N.M.) and Courtney Cabebe (Kihei, Hawaii) in both relays, as Erin Moon (Honolulu, Hawaii) anchored the 4x100 meter relay team to a sixth place finish in 51.56 seconds and Johnson anchored the 4x400 meter relay squad to another sixth place finish in 4:05.95.
Lindsay Currier () finished fourth in the discus with a top throw of 131’ 3” after a 14th-place finish in the shot put with a top effort of 34’ 4.75”. Nicholas Alvarado (, ) finished tenth in the men’s 5000 meter run in 15:35.64, Udoka Odoemene (Des Moines, Wash.) finished 11th in the triple jump with a top leap of 40’ 11.5”, Natalie Martinez (San Francisco, Calif.) posted an 11th place finish in the women’s 5000 meter run in 19:33.36, and Rhiannon Cadelinia (San Francisco, Calif.) finished right behind Martinez in 12th place in 19:34.15.
In the team standings, the men finished in sixth place with 38 points, while the women finished in seventh place with seventh place with 43 points. In two close competitions, swept the team championships, winning the men’s title by nine and a half points over Alaska Anchorage (166.5 to 157) and the women’s title by just four points over Seattle Pacific (162 to 158).
The Seattle University track and field team will have one final competition this season, as it participates in the Ken Foreman Invitational hosted by Seattle Pacific at West Seattle Stadium next Saturday, May 10, beginning at 9 a.m.
