SEATTLE – Seattle University will hosting the 2020-21 Western Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships this Saturday at Jefferson Park Golf Course. Seattle U previously hosted the event on the same course in 2016 and 2013.
The women's race will be a 6K course, starting at 10 a.m. while the men will run an 8K course starting at 11 a.m. Competing in this year's event will be athletes from California Baptist, Dixie State, Grand Canyon, NM State, Tarleton State, UTRGV, Utah Valley and the host Seattle U. In accordance with local and state health and safety guidelines, the event is closed to spectators.
"It feels like forever since we have been able to compete in a championship atmosphere," said Head Coach Kelly Sullivan. "We are thrilled to be able to host this event on one of the finest cross country courses around. We are so thankful for this incredible opportunity to compete at the historical Jefferson Golf Course which has been the site of many championship races. Our program and all the programs around the nation have found ways to work within the constraints of a pandemic year and I am personally just grateful that we get the chance to share in this event with the other programs in our conference."
The Redhawks will enter 11 total competitors Saturday. Sophomores Marie-Therese Chahrouri and Emily Harris will race for the women, while senior Kyle Kennedy, juniors Stephen Crocker, Devin Hasty, Ansel Pendley-Griffin and Lance Slichko, and freshmen Jack Crowell, Jay Grant, Alex Jensen and Lance Mason will race for the men.
"Our young men and women who will compete on Saturday have worked incredibly hard for nearly a year to get the chance to compete on this special day," Sullivan said. "This is a really unique and challenging year for all of us and we are just trying to stay focused on the physical and emotional health of all of our athletes and staff. Having no spectators will be new and strange for everyone competing, but I know for a fact that they can't wait for that gun to go off on Saturday.
"I just want to say thank you to everyone at Seattle University from the President's office to our incredible athletic administration and medical staff. And most of all, thank you to all of the men and women in our two programs as they have been truly an inspiration to all of us."
