SEATTLE - Seattle U cross country started off its 2021 season on a sunny Friday morning with a dual matchup against Washington at Magnuson Park in Seattle. Freshman Giuliano Scasso stole the show in his first collegiate race as he paced the men's group, finishing with a time of 20:26.11 in the 4.1 mile race.

Scasso ran with the pack for the majority of the race before he pulled away on the final lap to take home the victory. The last time Seattle U took first place on the men's side of this dual matchup was in 2012 when Erik Barkhaus won the four-mile. UW men's and women's squads are both ranked nationally by the United States Track and Field and Cross-Country Association (USTFCCCA) at 13 and 10, respectively.

"I am super excited for Giuliano on his victory today," said Head Coach Kelly Sullivan. "It was really impressive to watch him win and to do that as a true freshman was just great to see."

The next best Redhawk was sophomore Jay Grant, finishing with a time of 20:52.86, while James Parker rounds out the top three finishers with a time of 21:09.21. On the women's side, Junior Ellie Postma was the first to cross the finish line at 18:15.21, with sophomore Rowan Cuadrado just seven seconds off her pace. Rounding out the top three was freshman Lilianne Hargreaves, finishing with a time of 18:27.36 over the 3.1 mile course.

"I am really pleased with how we have gotten started this year," said Sullivan. "We have a great group on both sides and I am really proud of both our teams. I see the potential and desire that they possess and with their continued hard work, we will just continue to get better."
