EDINBURG, Texas – Seattle U track and field finished off the 2021 outdoor season on Saturday at the 2021 Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Edinburg, Texas, at the UTRGV Track & Field Complex. The Redhawks almost didn't even make it to Edinburg for the first day of events due to poor weather in the Edinburg area that continued throughout the weekend. Over the three-day event, Seattle U claimed one conference championship, eight All-WAC second team awards and marked one new school record.
Sophomore Nicole Whittern improved upon her 2019 WAC Championship bronze place finish in the javelin throw by claiming the conference title in 2021. Whittern increases her PR by 1.1 meters (3' 7") with her first-place mark of 42.63m (139' 10").
Junior Tricht Jocelyn set the new school record in the 200m during the prelims on Friday, finishing with a time of 24.80 for sixth place. Jocelyn also finished off a great individual weekend by claiming All-WAC Second Team in the 100m and 200m with times of 12.19 and 25.01. Freshman Emily Harris also claimed All-WAC Second Team honors, setting a new PR with a time of 11:20.07 in the Steeplechase (fifth all-time), while sophomore Isaiah Payne earned All-WAC second team honors in the 200m dash with a time of 21.77 (prelims time of 21.55).
Freshman Bryana Rogers and Morgan Young posted marks of 11.76m (38' 7") and 11.50m (37' 8.75") in the triple jump, earning them All-WAC Second Team placement with fourth and sixth place finishes. Fellow freshman Maya McCabe and Alex Franklin complete the list of All-WAC Second Team honorees with times of 2:14.17 and 1:56.00 in the 800m (prelims time of 2:15.88 and 1:55.00). Also in the field events, freshman Xavier Kelley placed in the high jump with a mark of 1.86m (6' 1.25").
All nine athletes that placed will return next year. Seattle U men's team finishes in sixth place overall, while the women's team finishes in seventh with Grand Canyon winning the team title on both sides.
Seattle U set an additional 22 PRs and six new marks on its all-time outdoor Top-10 list over the three-day event.
