Leading early, Seattle University softball (16-36) found themselves with a large deficit and nearly surmounted a comeback before ultimately falling, 9-8, to Utah Valley (18-40).

“We had a wild one today that was definitely a game of inches,” said head coach Dan Powers. “I was proud to see us battle back to our last at bat. The team showed a lot of growth down the stretch and improved in almost every aspect of the game.”

The Redhawks trailed, 9-4, heading into the final half inning as Utah Valley walked Rose Saenz (San Gabriel, Calif.) and Jenny Hurst (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) before Bubba Morrow (Auburn, Wash.) hit a clutch three-run homer to close the gap, 9-7. Savannah Loomis (Roseville, Calif.) would come around to score on a Utah Valley fielding error after reaching base on a single to draw Seattle U within one, 9-8, before Seattle U loaded the bases with two outs but the rally would fall just short.

Seattle U took a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth after scoring a run apiece in the first and fourth and a pair of unearned runs on a Wolverine throwing error in the second. Saenz hit an RBI double down the left field line in her first at bat while Isabella Geronimo (San Mateo, Calif.) hit a single down the left field line in the fourth to bring Kayla Shuster-Gonzales (Escondido, Calif.) home.

Utah Valley plated five runs in the fourth and four more in the sixth to take a 9-4 lead midway through the game. A pair of RBI doubles and an error on the Redhawk infield would score the fourth inning runs while a pair of RBI base knocks and two unearned runs would score in the sixth.

Paige Bouska (Keizer, Ore.) hit 3-for-5 at the plate while Morrow hit 2-for-4 to lead the Redhawk attack. Utah Valley outhit Seattle U slightly, 11-10.

In the circle for the Redhawks, Alyssa Reuble (Lynnwood, Wash.) suffered the loss, giving up five runs on six hits while walking one and striking out two.

Seattle U ends their season at the WAC Tournament, losing four seniors to graduation – Morrow, Mandie Sugita (Rossmoor, Calif.), Hurst, and Lisa Maulden (Maple Valley, Wash.). With a strong group of lowerclassmen, the Redhawks look to improve throughout the offseason leading up to the 2015 fall season.
