TEMPE, Ariz. – Seattle University softball (0-2) opened the season at the Kajikawa Classic and neared a comeback late in game one before dropping both games on the day. The Redhawks look to rebound versus Western Michigan (9am MST) and Bradley (11:15am MST) on Saturday.

Game 1: New Mexico 4, Seattle U 3

Seattle U took the early lead as Isabella Geronimo (San Mateo, Calif.) scored in the top of the first, a lead that would carry the Redhawks through the middle of the fifth inning.

The Lobos would put together a significant bottom of the fifth to take the 3-1 lead on a two RBI double to right center by Brandi Heimburg and a sacrifice fly from Jasmine Casados.

In the top of the seventh, Seattle U added a pair of runs but left one on base, falling short of the comeback to drop the contest, 4-3.

Alyssa Reuble (Lynnwood, Wash.) was handed the loss, allowing three runs on five hits as well as two walks, striking out one in 4.2 innings pitched. Lauren Soles picked up the win for the Lobos allowing three runs on six hits, striking out four, in the complete game.

Game 2: San Jose State 14, Seattle U 6

The Spartans would strike first as Sharon-Rena Estrada homered to center field to drive in two runs in the top of the first before the Redhawks regained the lead, 3-2, in the bottom of the inning.

San Jose State would take a 8-3 lead in their next chance at bat thanks to a grand slam by Estrada and an RBI single from Jessica Madrid. They would add six more runs over the fourth and fifth innings on a 2RBI home run in the fourth and a two RBI double in the fifth, both by Jessie Hufstetler.

Molly Cambell (San Diego, Calif.) hit her first career home run in the bottom of the second, driving in Breanna Timmons (Santa Maria, Calif.) while Maddy Kristjanson (Mountlake Terrace, Wash.) would score Savannah Loomis (Roseville, Calif.) in the bottom of the fifth, but the Redhawks would ultimately fall, 14-6.

Allison Lang earned the win in the circle giving up five runs on four hits while striking out four in four innings pitched. Mandie Sugita (Rossmoor, Calif.) was handed the loss for SU allowing the first eight runs on eight hits while walking one.
