The Seattle University baseball team completed its annual Scarlet and Black Series last weekend at Meridian Park Field, with the two teams splitting the contests to give the Black team a 2-1 series victory.

Saturday’s game was a pitcher’s duel, with Skyler Genger (Kent, Wash.) once again earning the victory for the Black Team. He combined with David Marshall (Kennewick, Wash.), Grant Gunning (Snohomish, Wash.), and Garrett Anderson (Kennewick, Wash.) on a four-hit shutout, with Anderson picking up his second save in as many games. Marshall picked up the key out of the game, stranding runners on second and third base in the seventh inning by inducing an inning-ending groundout.

In the second inning, TJ Byrne (Federal Way, Wash.) drove in the first run of the game with a two-out RBI single. Brian Olson (Black Diamond, Wash.) singled in the second run of the contest in the third inning, but Scarlet starter Will Dennis (Saratoga, Calif.) and his relievers held the Black team to just three hits.

The Scarlet team finally broke through in Sunday’s game, driving in runs throughout the afternoon in an 11-2 victory. The Scarlet team scored first, with Kyle Doyle (Covington, Wash.), pressed into service at first base, and Jack Reisinger (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) driving in runs off Black starter Ky Dye (Everett, Wash.) in the first inning.

The Scarlet team scored four runs in the second inning, starting with an RBI single by Cash McGuire (Kent, Wash.) and followed by a two-run home run from Landon Cray (Chimacum, Wash.) as well as a solo home run hit by Grant Newton (Bend, Ore.). McGuire and Newton each drove in a run in the third inning, and then McGuire earned two more runs batted in, followed by an RBI single by Newton, to increase the Scarlet lead to 11-0.

The Black team finally broke through in the seventh inning when Olson hit a sacrifice fly to drive in the first run, and then the Black team took advantage of a Scarlet error for the second and final run. Tarik Skubal (Kingman, Ariz.) earned the victory for the Scarlet team, with Doyle earning game MVP honors for his play both at first base and on the mound in relief.

The Seattle U baseball team will hold individual workouts throughout the rest of the fall quarter to keep the players sharp heading into the 2015 competition season. The 2015 schedule is being finalized and will be released to the public as soon as it is complete.
