SPOKANE, Wash. – At the Oregon-Washington Dual hosted by Spokane Falls Community College Saturday, the Seattle University men’s and women’s track and field teams set seven school records, most in field events, and set multiple personal records.
“What do you say to setting seven school records in one day other than amazing!” said head coach Trisha Steidl. “Everyone who set a record today has been working hard and it was great to see that pay off in such a huge way. The field event athletes stole the show today and deserve recognition for re-writing the record books.”
Emily Walters (Olympia, Wash.) broke three records herself. She ran the 100 meter hurdles in 15.56, shaving .03 seconds off her record from last weekend, jumped 5.40 (17-8.75) meters in the long jump for fifth place, and had a distance of 10.99 (36-0.75) meters in the triple jump for seventh place. Katie Tougas (Edmonds, Wash.) also broke the previous long jump record with a distance of 5.25 meters (17-2.75).
Bethany Richards (Shoreline, Wash.) bested the school record in the hammer throw with a distance of 35.13 meters (115-3) as well as the shot put with a throw of 11.70 meters (38-4.75). She also set a personal record in the discus with a distance of 32.79 meters (107-07).
The other two Redhawk records came in the form of Ariel Johnson (Moscow, Idaho) in the pole vault with a leap of 3.45 meters (11-3.75) and Dylan Burnett (Lynnwood, Wash.) in the javelin with a distance of 63.49 meters (208-4).
In the 200 meter dash, Duncan MacKay (Renton, Wash.) finished third with a personal best time of 22.59. Zachary Schlachter (Tigard, Ore.) was behind him in sixth, also with a personal record of 22.80. Schlachter also competed in the 800 meter dash and set a personal record of 49.85. Taylor Fitch (Seattle, Wash.) was in seventh place in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.83, and also scored points in the 100 meter dash with a fifth-place finish of 11.27. MacKay also competed in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.55.
The relays also scored for Seattle U. Cooper Hartman (Silverdale, Wash.), Fitch, MacKay, and Schlachter finished third in the 4x100 meter relay with a time of 43.02. On the women’s side, the 4x400 meter relay team made up of Rachel Purcell (Mission Viejo, Calif.), Elena Collins (Eugene, Ore.), Clare Obradovich (Tigard, Ore.), and Meeghan Bergmann (Portland, Ore.) came in fifth with a time of 4:01.48, and Obradovich, Purcell, Bergmann, and Alyssa Lout (Tempe, Ariz.) finished seventh in the 4x100 meter relay with a time of 49.96.
Sarah Bolce (Sacramento, Calif.) finished seventh in the 5000 meter run with a personal best time of 18:14.50. In the 800 meter run, Jennifer Stolle (Seattle, Wash.) set a personal record with a time of 2:26.32, and also finished the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:49.02. In the 400 meter run, Purcell finished with a time of 59.06, followed closely by Obradovich with a personal record time of 59.17.
Stephen Squatrito (Phoenix, Ariz.) placed eighth in the pole vault with a jump of 4.10 meters (13-5.25). Bo Anderson (Tacoma, Wash.) came in ninth in the shot put with a distance of 14.22 meters (46-8), and competed in the hammer throw with a personal record of 40.65 meters (133-4). He also threw 32.41 meters (106-4) in the discus.
Brandan Haggarty (Missoula, Mont.) competed in the hammer throw with a toss of 38.02 meters (124-09). Sara Blakely (Spokane, Wash.) also had two personal records, throwing 10.86 meters (35-7.75) in the shot put and 31.68 meters (103-11) in the discus.
In other events, Ryan Dennison (Pacifica, Calif.) set a personal record in the 1500 meter run in 4:02.99. Both Peter and Michael VanNuland (Newcastle, Wash.) set personal bests in the 800 meter run with times of 2:05.20 and 2:09.52, respectively. Nick Bever (Seattle, Wash.) competed in the long and triple jumps, finishing with personal best distances of 5.97 meters (19-7) and 12.79 meters (41-11.5).
“There were a lot of terrific performances out there today in addition to the numerous school records that were broken. With over a month to go this season, I know the best is yet to come,” said Steidl.
The next competition for the Seattle University track and field teams will be the Oregon Relays in Eugene, Ore. April 22.
