TACOMA, Wash. – Dylan Burnett (Lynnwood, Wash.) set a new school record with a winning javelin throw of 57.80 meters (189’-07”) at the PLU Invitational at a rainy PLU Track to begin the Seattle University outdoor track & field season on Saturday, March 12.

“The team is always excited to get the outdoor season started,” said assistant coach Chad Pharis. “The weather is not always great, but something about getting outside for the first time adds a certain level of excitement. Dylan showed this by setting the school record on his first throw.”

The Redhawks’ second individual victory of the day came in the 3000 meter steeplechase when Kelton Sears (Maple Valley, Wash.) won in 9:52.79. Graham Kinzel-Grubbs (Portland, Ore.) came in fourth in the 5000 meter run with a time of 15:41.7h, followed by Kevin Kopetz (Derry, N.H.) in seventh with a time of 15:59.6h.

Bo Anderson (Tacoma, Wash.) tied the school record in the shot put with a distance of 13.26 meters (43’-06.00”) for sixth place and competed in the discus with a distance of 31.06 meters. In addition to Burnett’s win in the javelin, Brandan Haggarty (Missoula, Mont.) placed third with a distance of 51.99 meters (170’-07”). He also competed in the hammer throw with a 40.95 meter toss.

Cooper Hartman (Silverdale, Wash.) tied for second in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 58.5h, and Taylor Fitch (Seattle, Wash.) grabbed two third-place finishes in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.0h and 200 meter dash in 22.6h. The men’s 4x400 meter relay made up of Samuel Engle (Portland, Ore.), Hartman, Jude Martinez (Hagatna, Guam), and Fitch finished third with a time of 3.29.0h.

In the triple jump, Becca Urbany (Damascus, Ore.) finished third with a jump of 10.09 meters (33’-01.25”), and Alyssa Lout (Tempe, Ariz.) finished fourth in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.8h.

Martinez also competed in the 400 meter hurdles and finished sixth with a time of 59.9h, followed closely by teammate Engle in 1:00.2h. Keenan Clinch (Sammamish, Wash.) came in seventh in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:01.6h.

Amanda Luna (Beavercreek, Ore.) placed eighth in the triple jump with a distance of 9.22 meters. Emee Mathew (Redmond, Wash.), Bethany Richards (Shoreline, Wash.), and Sara Blakely (Spokane, Wash.) finished 8-9-10 in the shot put with distances of 10.31m, 10.16m, and 9.80m, respectively. Blakeley also competed in the hammer throw with a distance of 26.44 meters.

In other running events, Ashley Dalton (Bellingham, Wash.) ran the 5000 meter run in 20.44.5h for a personal record, Lout finished the 200 meter dash in 27.5h. Allison Prather (Carpinteria, Calif.) ran the 1500 meter run in 5:19.70. Ryan Dennison (Pacifica, Calif.) competed in both the 800 meter run (2:07.4) and 1500 meter run (4:16.00), as did Graham Miller (Spokane, Wash.) with 2:10.2 in the 800 meter run and 4:24.00 in the 1500 meter run. Peter VanNuland (Newcastle, Wash.) finished the 1500 meter run in 4:13.10.

On the field side, Clare Monahan (Centennial, Colo.) threw 25.81 meters in the javelin, and Josh Walters (Sacramento, Calif.) competed in the shot put (10.33m), discus (33.69m), and hammer throw (35.76m).

“There should be more great marks from everyone as the season progresses,” said Pharis.

The track and field teams will next head to Eugene, Ore. for the Oregon Preview on Saturday, March. 19.
