On the second day of the Husky Classic at Dempsey Indoor, the Seattle University women set three new indoor track and field records in one of the final meets before the Great West Conference Championships.
In the 60 meter hurdles, Emily Walters (Olympia, Wash.) set a record of 9.41, beating her own previous record of 9.49. She also set a new record in the triple jump with a leap of 11.29 meters. Kaytie Bateman (Chehalis, Wash.) also competed in the 60m hurdles with a time of 10.49. In the 60 meter dash, Alyssa Lout (Tempe, Ariz.) came within .14 seconds of her own school record with a time of 8.18. Rachel Purcell (Mission Viejo, Calif.), in the 400 meter dash, set a record of 58.80, erasing her previous record of 59.32. Clare Obradovich (Tigard, Ore.) also had a great run in the 400 meter dash in a time of 59.35.
The third record of the day came when Ariel Johnson (Moscow, Idaho) cleared 3.36 meters (11-00.25) in the pole vault, bypassing the previous record of 3.30m.
“The team really stepped things up at this meet,” said head coach Trisha Steidl. “Our focus has been on being mentally tough and stepping to the line with confidence and it was obvious these past two days that the student-athletes have taken this to heart. We set five school records, were close on a few others, and a plethora of PRs and almost-PRs were set at this meet.”
On the distance side for the women, Sarah Bolce (Sacramento, Calif.) competed in the mile with a time of 5.07.70. Cara Talty (Raritan, N.J.) ran the 3000m in 10:23.98, and Lauren Hammerle (Seattle, Wash.) was just behind her in 10:26.31.
The Redhawk men also performed well. Zach Stanfield (Adna, Wash.) ran the 60 meter dash in 6.98, just .06 from his own record, and finished the 200 meter dash in 22.12. Duncan MacKay (Renton, Wash.) finished the 200 meter dash in 22.86, and in the 400 meter dash, Zachary Schlachter (Tigard, Ore.) finished in 50.70 while Cooper Hartman (Silverdale, Wash.) came in at 51.98.
In the 800 meter run, Dan Auld (Eugene, Ore.) ran in 1:57.84. Kelton Sears (Maple Valley, Wash.) competed in the mile run with a time of 4:19.04, and Adam Kollgaard (Kent, Wash.) finished the 3000 meter run in 8:51.63.
In the field events, Ty Jaros (Eugene, Ore.) and Nick Bever (Seattle, Wash.) competed in the long jump, leaping distances of 6.28 meters and 5.41 meters respectively.
“The team is in a much stronger place than we were at this time last year. That’s motivating in all sorts of ways and is a trend that I hope will continue into tomorrow’s meet as well as bolster our confidence going into the conference meet,” said Steidl.
The final indoor meet before the GWC Championships is the Husky Open at Dempsey Indoor on Sunday.
