The Seattle University swimming teams started the Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference (PCSC) championships with a victory in the men’s 200 medley relay as the conference meet kicked off Wednesday evening at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool.
The quartet of Bryson Chiu (Carmel, Ind.), Doug Djang (Seattle, Wash.), Jordan Anderson (Newberg, Ore.), and Chris Fulton (Snohomish, Wash.) set a new school record by finishing the 200 medley relay in 1:31.07, three-tenths of a second faster than the team from UC San Diego. The relay squad of Keith Andrews (Hillsboro, Ore.), Nick Hryciuk (Snohomish, Wash.), Eric Pedack (Snohomish, Wash.), and Jeff Tibbals (Moscow, Idaho) won the "B" final and finished ninth in the event with a time of 1:36.01.
In the men’s 800 freestyle relay, Garrett Nugent (Valencia, Calif.), Tibbals, Nathan Freeman (Phoenix, Ariz.), and Andrew Martinez (Concord, Calif.) earned a fourth-place finish with a time of 7:00.01. The SeattleU men earned the most points in the swim events, but without a representative in the one-meter diving event, they ended up sixth in the overall team standings with 116 points.
On the women’s side, the foursome of Tina Nguyen (Hillsboro, Ore.), Alexis Morehouse (Vancouver, Wash.), Heather Nelson (Bremerton, Wash.), and Hanna Basler (El Cajon, Calif.) finished in seventh place with a time of 1:51.36. The team of Sarena Hobson (Las Vegas, Nev.), Alexandra Carter (Salt Lake City, Utah), Hayley Cobb (Irvine, Calif.), and Megan Lavin (Kalispell, Mont.) earned a 16th-place finish with a finals time of 1:52.30.
The 800 freestyle relay quartet of Elizabeth Hanohano (Honolulu, Hawaii), Nguyen, Kelsey Henan (Billings, Mont.), and Cobb missed the school record by just under a second, finishing in fifth place with a time of 7:50.79. After that event, the women’s team was tied for fifth, but with no points gained in the three-meter diving event, SeattleU finished the first day in seventh place with 96 points.
Seattle University continues competition at the PCSC Championships Thursday in the 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle, and 200 freestyle relay.
