The men’s basketball team showed that it could play at the same level as a Pac-10 squad like , but in the end the Beavers were able to hold on for a 59-50 victory Monday night at Gill Coliseum.

Thanks to two three-pointers by Chris Gweth (, ) and layups from Mike Boxley (, ) and Shaun Burl (), Seattle University took an early 10-5 lead. responded with a 12-0 run over the next five minutes, nine of the points from Calvin Hayes, to take a 17-10 lead. Four points each by Burl and Leigh Swanson () allowed SeattleU to close the first half on a 10-3 run to come within two at 30-28.

(5-5) started the second half by outscoring SeattleU 14-6 to extend its lead to 44-34 with 12:37 left. An 8-1 run by Seattle University allowed the visitors to come with three points, but the Beavers responded by holding SeattleU to three points over the final 4:30 of the game, hitting 9-of-12 shots from the free throw line to pull away for the victory.

Burl shot 4-of-5 from the field and 4-of-4 from the free throw line to score 12 points, matching the point total of Michael Wright (), who also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Swanson contributed nine points and four rebounds off the bench, Gweth finished with six points, seven rebounds, and three steals, and Boxley added six points, four rebounds, and four assists.

Hayes finished with a career-high 24 points for on 6-of-9 shooting from the field and 10-of-12 shooting from the free throw line. Daniel Deane earned ten points and four rebounds, Omari Johnson contributed seven points, seven rebounds, and two blocked shots, and Seth Tarver also scored seven points to go along with a game-high ten rebounds.

Oregon State shot 44.7 percent from the field and 20-of-33 (60.6%) from the free throw line, while Seattle University hit 36.8 percent of its field goal attempts and 6-of-9 chances from the charity stripe. Each time finished with 34 rebounds, and SeattleU committed 13 turnovers and forced the Beavers into 16 turnovers.

(7-5) will face Loyola Marymount at KeyArena at the Thursday, Jan. 1, starting at 6:30 p.m. The game marks the first home game for SeattleU as a Division I school against a Division I opponent in almost 29 years.
