OREM, UT - Seattle U men's soccer got the win in their conference opening match up with Utah Valley, 2-1, Thursday night in Utah. Powered by a brace from River Stewart, the Redhawks got out to a 2-0 lead and were able to hold on as they secured the win in a clash between top teams in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC).
After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, River Stewart put the Redhawks on top early in the second half with a highlight real worthy goal in the 49th. Mo Mohamed would send a ball into the box that found the chest of Stewart, who then turned and got off a bicycle kick with the Utah Valley goalkeeper draped on him. The ball found the back of the net and secured the junior his first Division I goal.
For Mohamed, it was his 10th career assist which moved him into a tie for 9th all-time in program history. The senior out of Portland, Ore., tied Redhawk legends Ian Hines-Ike (2012-14), Sam Langston (2014-16), Noe Meza (2016-21), and James Morris (2019-22).
Stewart's night wasn't over after the opener, as he found the back of the net again in the 58th minute. This time he redirected a shot by Jeremy Opong that snuck into the net and gave SU to two goal advantage.
The Wolverines would deny the Redhawks the shutout on the night, scoring one in the final 10 minutes. Despite this, Seattle U would close out the match to move their unbeaten streak in conference play to nine, dating back to last season.
