BOULDER CITY, Nev. - Seattle U men's golf senior Nathan Cogswell claimed medalist honors at the 2022 Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Championships, finishing with a three-round total of nine-under 207 (73-67-67). Cogswell becomes the first Redhawk ever to claim the award and punches his ticket to an NCAA regional. The event took place at the Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nevada, on the 7,482 yards course with a par of 72.
"A huge win for Nathan," said Head Coach Marc Chandonnet. "He has been knocking on the door for years and although the road was difficult, he got hot at the right time to earn his first individual victory. Like any success in life nothing comes without an amazing support system. I'd like to thank Greg Manley and Craig Elkins for their support and helping these young men become great leaders. It has been fantastic to have our former WAC Freshman of the Year, Joe Harvie, on board supporting our team this past month. The road doesn't end here, I am already strategizing on what our game plan will be at each potential site and look forward to keeping this train rolling."
Cogswell posted back to back season low rounds of five-under 67 to take the individual title by two strokes. The Kent, Washington, native was one of the best in the field from the par three and four, tying for first in par four scoring (two-under) and average (3.93) and tying for third in par three scoring (one-under) and average (2.92). The senior ties the all-time record for low 36 hole total (134) through converting 12 birdies and only bogeying twice over this span.
As a team, the Redhawks would finish in seventh out of ten teams at nine-over 873. Abilene Christian went on the win the team title, defeating Sam Houston State by one stroke.
Senior Harrison Murphy (79-71-67) matched Cogswell with his own five-under 67 in the final round, highlighted by a hole-in-one on eight. Last week's WAC Golfer of the Week finished in a tie for 15th place, improving his play every round. Fellow senior Jack Rahon (75-73-73) posted another one-over par 73 in the final round, while sophomore Blake Kukula and junior Alex Fowke round out the team score with three-round totals of 229 (78-73-78) and 235 (84-74-77), respectively.
The 2022 NCAA Tournament Selection Show will air Wednesday, May 4, at 1 p.m. Pacific on the Golf Channel. Cogswell will be one of 15 total individuals vying for one of the six spots in the National Finals.
