SEATTLE – Seattle U cross country is looking forward to the opportunity to compete for the first time since 2019. The Redhawks begin the season by heading to Portland, Ore., to take on University of Portland in a dual match-up Sunday. The women will participate in a 5600m race while the men will run a 7500m course.
'It will have been 338 days since the last time anyone wore the Seattle University track and field and cross country uniform in competition," said Head Coach Kelly Sullivan. "But who is counting, right?!"
"We have so many people to thank from our administration, medical support, family, alums, friends and most importantly these young student-athletes who stayed the course through it all," Sullivan said. "We are also thankful for the seven men and two women who will be suiting up this coming Sunday and I bet they have a lot to be excited about. It is hard not to think about the eleven seniors who graduated last year and never got the chance to compete in their last outdoor track and field seasons. I will always remember the day we heard that everything was going to be shut down and that our outdoor track and field season was going to be over too soon. As we sat in our team room with those 14 seniors, we tried to come to some sort of terms with how this was ending which I think we all understood would not be possible. Three of those seniors are back and with our entire 2021 cross country and track and field teams will be dedicating this season to that graduating class. There is no better place to start then with a dual at the University of Portland, whose men's teams and programs are led by Head Coach Rob Conner, who was one of the very first collegiate student-athletes I ever coached all those years ago. I know all of us will have big smiles on our faces when the gun goes off Sunday for both races."
This past offseason, The men have added three talented freshman in Jack Crowell, Matthew Holme and Alex Jensen. Crowell is a 2019 4A Sky-Em League 800m Champion, 4A Sky-Em League 4x400m champions, 4A State runner-up in the 800m and a 4a All-State honorable mention in cross country, Holme Earned four letters in track and field and cross country at Sumner High School in Sumner, Wash., and was cross country team MVP for 2019. Jensen comes from Lakewood High School in Arlington, Wash., where he was first team all North West Conference in cross country and basketball in 2019. All three competed numerous times at state competitions in cross country and track and field.
