MOSCOW, IDAHO – Two school records and 22 total personal records were achieved on Friday as Seattle U track and field put on a show at the Idaho Team Challenge, held in Moscow, Idaho, at the Kibbie-ASUI Activity Center. Senior Michelle Newblom broke her own school record in the 60m hurdles finals with her first-place time of 8.91, while sophomore Regie Grady took the 200m dash by storm with a program-record, second-place mark of 25.59.
"This was a big day for all of us, but especially for Michelle and Regie," said Head Coach Kelly Sullivan. "I'm very happy for them."
Newblom also set a new personal record in the 200m dash, coming in ninth place at 26.55.
The rest of the women added quite a few marks to the PR total. Sophomore Tayla Weaver set a new personal record in the 60m dash, while classmate Nicole Golba did the same in the 60m hurdles. Both competitors in the high jump (sophomore Rachel Van Liew and senior Laurel Mack-Wilson) set new personal bests, as did Jami Tresselt in the weight throw.
On the men's side, the 60m dash was the standout event, with freshmen Dominic Jacobs (7.06; PR) and Noah Payne (7.11) taking fifth and sixth place, respectively, in the preliminary round. Sophomore Brant Yamamoto and freshman Tom Topinka also set PRs in the event; Topinka also set a new personal best in the 200m dash, along with sophomore Zach Gonzalez and his mark of 22.64. In the 60m hurdles, sophomore Lucas Milne achieved a PR of 8.76 in the finals, while classmate William Sun set his own PR in the preliminaries; Milne also achieved personal records in the long jump and shot put. Finally, freshmen Ryan O'Connor and Lance Mason both set PRs in the 800m run, while junior Kyle Kennedy and sophomore Stephen Crocker did the same in the mile run.
"Overall, our team really competed," said Sullivan. "That was the purpose of this trip – to travel and compete with a full team and see how they would respond."
The Redhawks are not done for the weekend, as a number of distance runners are heading to Portland on Sunday, Feb. 9, for the Portland Indoor Meet No. 2. The first events will begin at 12:00 p.m. PT.
