On Saturday, Seattle U track and field started their indoor season by taking on dozens of tough programs at the UW Indoor Preview, held in the Dempsey Indoor facility on the University of Washington campus. Both the men and the women featured a number of new faces, and plenty of familiar faces made their debuts in new events.
 
In the 60m dash, sophomore Isaiah Payne finished 13th in the qualifying round with a time of 6.99, best in his heat and just 0.07 seconds away from the school record. His brother, freshman Noah Payne, crossed the finish line shortly behind him at 7.04 in the same heat. Isaiah Payne later competed in the 200m dash, finishing 10th overall at 22.07. Sophomore Stewart Keene, making his first appearance in a 400m race, finished in 53.42, and senior Steve Brown posted a time of 1:28.74 in his first-ever 600m run.
 
The men's 800m run had just one Redhawk in freshman Lance Mason, who started off his career at Seattle U with a personal-best time of 2:01.49. Sophomore Ansel Pendley-Griffin, in his first 1000-meter race, had a time of 2:26.97, while junior Kyle Kennedy (8:50.47) and sophomore Stephen Crocker (9:09.46) both set new personal records in the 3k run – Kennedy by about 14.5 seconds and Crocker by over 9 seconds. Redshirt sophomore Lance Slichko, racing track for the first time in two years, opened his season with a 4:20.93 mile. Sophomore Lucas Milne finished off the races by competing in the 60m hurdles for the first time, finishing in 9.10 seconds. Milne also made his debut in the long jump, leaping 5.65m; he was joined by freshman Xavier Kelley, who came away from his first meet of the season with a mark of 5.95m.
 
On the women's side, senior Michelle Newblom took eighth place in the 60m hurdles qualifying round at 8.99 seconds, just 0.06 away from her own school record. Sophomore Regie Grady started off her season with a personal-best time of 26.37 in the 200m dash, as did senior Siobhan Rubio (59.58) in the 400m dash. In the 600m run, fellow freshman Maya McCabe impressed with her time of 1:36.90, reaching 11th place overall and taking second place in her heat. The women's mile run featured freshmen Delaney Griffin and Fiona O'Leary, who set respective times of 5:10.29 and 5:20.81 for their first appearances in the event. Griffin's time was also third in her heat.
 
In the 3k race, senior Olivia Stein led the Redhawks with her time of 10:13.18 in the invite section, while her teammates raced in an early-morning section led by sophomores Marie-Therese Chahrouri at 10:21.05 and Courtney Gelmini at 10:21.13. Both Chahrouri's and Gelmini's marks were personal bests by over 19 seconds and over 44 seconds, respectively. Freshman Grace Much finished the race in 10:35.99, a personal best. Finally, sophomore Tallia Sova set a new personal record in the shot put with 11.62m.
 
"We had a lot of good performances today," said Head Coach Kelly Sullivan. "A big group will be headed down to Portland next week, so we're ready to start training for that."
 
The aforementioned meet in Portland, Ore., hosted by University of Portland, will last from Jan. 25-26. The first events on Saturday will start at 12:00 p.m. PT.
