PORTLAND, ORE. – Seattle U track and field sent several runners out to the Chiles Center at the University of Portland on Sunday to compete in their second meet of the year, the Portland Indoor Meet, and came away with several fantastic times on the building's brand-new Beynon surface.
The men's side featured two first-place winners: sophomore Isaiah Payne with 22.53 in the 200m dash and classmate Zach Gonzalez with a personal-best 50.35 in the 400m dash. Sophomore Lucas Milne also performed well in his first-ever collegiate 200m, taking first place in his heat and fifth overall. In the 800m run, senior Andrew Ayers led the way for Seattle U by posting a time of 2:00.11. He was followed closely in that event by freshman Lance Mason, who posted a PR of 2:00.98, and freshman Ryan O'Connor, who finished his first collegiate race in 2:01.65. Junior Kyle Kennedy led Seattle U in the 3k run with his time of 8:51.11 to close out the day.
The women's side featured 4x400m relay team of sophomore Nicole Golba, freshman Maya McCabe, senior Michelle Newblom and sophomore Regie Grady finished in a combined first place in the field with their time of 4:03.11. McCabe also excelled in the 400m dash, where she ran a second-place 59.61, while Grady took third place in the 200m dash with a personal-best 26.16. Newblom also ran in the 200m dash, finishing best in her heat at 27.30.
In the mile run, four different Redhawks placed in the top 10. Freshman Delaney Griffin took third place in the field with her mark of 5:10.97, while sophomore Marie-Therese Chahrouri finished just behind her at a fourth-place 5:11.83. In fifth place came freshman Grace Much with her time of 5:12.73, followed by classmate Fiona O'Leary with a personal-best 5:17.48, good for 10th place. Finally, in the women's 3k run, sophomore Courtney Gelmini shaved over five seconds off her personal record, finishing in fourth place at 10:15.51.
"It was a lot of fun to get to take part in the inaugural meet on Portland's resurfaced indoor track," said Assistant Coach Chad Pharis. "The team competed very hard today, and we came out with a lot of success from their effort. This was a great step forward toward our goals for this year."
In their next outing, the Redhawks will return to the Dempsey Indoor facility in Seattle to take part in the UW Invitational on Jan. 31-Feb. 1. The first day's events will begin at 1:00 p.m. PT, while the second day's events start at 10:00 a.m.
