The Western Athletic Conference has announced the 2015-16 Academic All-WAC teams for men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, and men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams. With 43 overall honorees, Seattle University earned the second highest number of honorees behind Grand Canyon (72).

SU women’s indoor track and field led the way with 16 honorees after also posting the highest collective GPA among all Seattle U athletics teams during winter quarter (3.744). Sophomores Johanna Erickson (Edgewood, Wash.), Madison Lichter (Snohomish, Wash.), Abby Wachter (Beaverton, Ore.), and Maia Sparkman (Langley, Wash.), juniors Sandy Dasalla Good (Mountlake Terrace, Wash.), Katie Fleming (Paradise Valley, Ariz.), Mariah Gibbs (Banks, Ore.), Moira O’Connor Lenth (Seattle, Wash.), Lila Rice (Redmond, Wash.), and Mandy Rusch (Redmond, Wash.), and seniors Taylor de Laveaga (Gilbert, Ariz.), Lindsay Frederick (Seattle, Wash.), Rebecca Lassere (Boise, Idaho), Mandie Maddux (Gresham, Ore.), Alisa Poplawski (Newcastle, Wash.), and Elena Smith (Seattle, Wash.) represented the team and received Academic All-WAC honors.

Following closely behind, women’s swimming earned 11 honorees including sophomores Maddie Dickman (Sacramento, Calif.) and Paige Treff (Orland, Calif.), juniors Emma Foster (Clancy, Mont.), Kaitlyn Overstreet (Cottonwood Heights, Utah), Sidney Pinger (Tualatin, Ore.), Katie Rottman (Phoenix, Ariz.), Kate Sabourin (Santa Rosa, Calif.), and Blaise Wittenauer-Lee (Portland, Ore.), and seniors Stephanie Bayless (Spokane, Wash.), Jane Liggett (Portland, Ore.), and Allie McGavock (Glen Ellyn, Ill.).

Men’s indoor track and field earned seven places on the list – sophomores Ben Monk (Olympia, Wash.), Cameron Peters (Santa Clara, Calif.), Matthew Seidel (Santa Clara, Calif.), and Chay Weaver (Louisville, Colo.), junior Louis Rodrigues (Alameda, Calif.), and seniors Gus Arroyo (Portland, Ore.) and Collin Overbay (Spokane, Wash.) – while men’s swimming earned five – sophomores Morgan Montemayor (Seattle, Wash.) and Julian Morales (Phoenix, Ariz.), junior Tanner Schelling (Boise, Idaho), and seniors Sam Donohue (Portland, Ore.) and Chris Weinert (Gresham, Ore.).

Women’s and men’s basketball rounded out Seattle U’s honorees as sophomores Jacinta Beckley (Wellington, New Zealand) and Ashlyn Lewey (Spokane, Wash.) and junior Wilma Afunugo (Plano, Texas) represented the women and senior Jack Crook (Manchester, England) represented the men.

The entirety of the Seattle U student-athlete population posted a strong 3.245 GPA for winter quarter 2016 including 21 individual 4.0’s. Nearly half (41 percent) of the student-athlete body earned Dean’s List Honors (3.5 GPA or higher).

To receive Academic All-WAC honors, a student-athlete must have completed at least one academic year at their institution, have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA, and have participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s contests.
