KANSAS CITY, Mo. – No. 15 Seattle University men’s soccer (17-3-0) would take a 2-0 lead into halftime and add two more goals in the second 45 minutes of play en route to a 4-0 win over CSU Bakersfield (7-6-6) in the Western Athletic Conference tournament semifinals. The win marked the Redhawks’ eighth straight win, including 15th in the last 16 games, and ninth shutout of the season.

“It was a good win with terrific goals and to get our ninth shutout of the season is exciting,” said head coach Pete Fewing. “We did a good job adjusting and advancing on a surface we’re not used to. It was great to get a lot of guys on the field and Bakersfield didn’t want to make it easy on us. We had to impose our will on them right away and I was pleased we were able to do that. Utah Valley is going to be a different game than, I think, we saw a week ago at their place. They are fighting for an NCAA playoff spot and they’re going to want to win. Beating a team twice in a year is definitely a challenge.”

Alex Roldan (Pico Rivera, Calif.) scored what would be the game-winner, the second of his career and first of the season, in the 16th minute before David Olsen (Auburn, Wash.) made it 2-0 on a rebounded shot by Sergio Rivas (Albuquerque, N.M.) off the crossbar.

Olsen would tie Miguel Gonzalez’s record for Seattle U Division I single season goals with his 15th of the season in the 57th minute on a header off a free kick by Sam Langston (Sammamish, Wash.). Just 1:10 later, Michael Roberts (Issaquah, Wash.) beat past the Roadrunner defenders and keeper for the final SU insurance goal.

With the win, Seattle U remains tied with No. 5 Creighton for the greatest number of wins in the nation (17).

Olsen and Roberts led the Redhawks with five shots apiece as they outshot the Roadrunners, 14-5, while SU earned six corner kicks to CSUB’s three.

In goal, Shane Haworth (Puyallup, Wash.) made one save in his ninth shutout of the season, tying his own DI record from a season ago, while Bakersfield’s Nicolas Clever made two saves.

The Redhawks tied several WAC tournament records as Olsen’s two goals tied the conference record for individual goals in a tournament game. Seattle U’s four goals also tied SMU (11/16/97) and Fresno State (11/13/98) for most team goals in a tournament match while their four-goal margin of victory tied for the largest margin of victory (SMU def. Tulsa, 4-0, 11/16/97).

Seattle U will face the No. 2 seed in the tournament, Utah Valley, in the WAC title game on Sunday, Nov. 15 at 1 p.m. CT/11 a.m. PT. The match will be broadcast for free on the WAC Digital Network online (www.wacsports.com/live) and on the WAC Digital Network app. The winner will receive the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
