Seattle University men’s soccer (15-3-0, 8-1-0 WAC) took an early lead and added an insurance goal late in the game to earn a 4-2 win over Incarnate Word (8-8, 4-6 WAC) in their final regular season home game. With the win, Seattle U earned their second Western Athletic Conference regular season title in the last three years and a No. 1 seed in the WAC tournament in two weeks.

“Every time we play, we’re going to get everyone’s best game, and that helps us get better,” said head coach Pete Fewing. “We just need to be a little more clinical in what we do. We had some great individual performances – Sergio [Rivas], Alex Roldan, Jeff Rose – and David [Olsen] and [Michael Roberts] combined really well together today, but we just didn’t put it all together. Near the end, you could feel that we were starting to gain momentum and that fourth goal was great. I’m really happy for our seniors. It’s not easy to come from a position of being ranked and getting everyone’s best game and best efforts. So the ability to be successful in that kind of situation is good.”

David Olsen (Auburn, Wash.) scored his first goal of the game en route to his first career hat trick as a Redhawk in the seventh minute off a corner kick by Sam Langston (Sammamish, Wash.). Under seven minutes later, he would give Seattle U a 2-0 lead, coming up the left side after Michael Roberts (Issaquah, Wash.) fed him the ball from the midfield.

Langston earned a place on the scoresheet in the 39th minute on a penalty kick after Agustin Andrade (Ojai, Calif.) was taken down in the box to give SU a 3-0 lead.

The Cardinals’ Ben Conway scored back-to-back goals, the first assisted by Carlos Guerrero to bring Incarnate Word within one goal just after halftime, but Olson completed the hat trick in the 75th minute on a Sergio Rivas (Albuquerque, N.M.) assist.

Prior to the game, the Redhawks also honored this year’s senior class in their final regular season home game. Hamza Haddadi (Shoreline, Wash.), Shane Haworth (Puyallup, Wash.), Austin Sweeney (Federal Way, Wash.), and Michael Roberts (Issaquah, Wash.) were honored prior to the match.

In goal, Haworth made four saves while Chase Therrien made seven for Incarnate Word. The Redhawks and Cardinals combined for 41 total shots as SU outshot UIW, 26-15.

With the win, Seattle U earns a No. 1 seed and first round bye in the WAC tournament from Nov. 12-15 in Kansas City, Mo. The Redhawks face the winner of the No.4/No. 5 seed game on Friday, Nov. 13 at 7:30 p.m. Stay tuned to GoSeattleU.com at the end of regular season play next weekend for the full bracket and more information leading into the tournament.
