SPOKANE, Wash. – Seattle University men’s soccer (2-1-0) scored three goals in the second half alone for a 3-0 victory over Northwestern (0-1-1) at the Gonzaga Invitational.

“It was tough to break them down in the first half, but I was very pleased we got a lot of good shots and three goals in the second half,” said head coach Pete Fewing. “It was a terrific goal by Hamza and two terrific goals by Michael Roberts. We had great contributions from guys coming off the bench and I was really impressed and happy for our guys, because they worked really hard. Defensively, it’s our second shutout of the season; we had nine last year and we want more than that this year.”

The game still scoreless heading into the second half, Hamza Haddadi (Shoreline, Wash.) scored what would be the game-winner from in the box in the 49th minute.

Seattle U outshooting Northwestern, 5-1, over the next almost 20 minutes, Haddadi fed the ball to Michael Roberts (Issaquah, Wash.) on the close left wing, who netted the ball to give the Redhawks a 2-0 lead.

In the 85th minute, just over five minutes before the end of regulation, Roberts added an insurance goal, his second of the game, with an unassisted shot on a rebound. The 3-0 advantage would be the Redhawks’ final margin of victory.

SU outshot NU, 28-6, led by Sergio Rivas (Albuquerque, N.M.) with six and Alex Roldan (Pico Rivera, Calif.) with five. Roberts converted two of his three total shots into goals.

In goal, Shane Haworth (Puyallup, Wash.) notched his second shutout of the season, making three saves. For the Wildcats, Zak Allen made six saves while allowing all three goals.

The Redhawks close the weekend on Saturday, Sept. 5 at 1 p.m. vs. Cal Poly in Spokane.
