Three school records fell in the throwing events, and several other personal bests were established as the Seattle University track and field team competed Friday and Saturday in the Ken Shannon Invitational, hosted by the University of Washington at the Husky Track Stadium.
Friday evening, Chris Scaffa (Lake Oswego, Ore.) set the school record in the hammer throw with a mark of 47.48 meters (155’ 9”) on his final effort. Devon Walker (Ventura, Calif.) posted a season-best mark of 44.94 meters (147’ 5”), and Malaki Seanoa (Everett, Wash.) finished with a mark of 41.02 meters (134’ 7”).
Walker would go on to break the school record in the discus throw with a mark of 44.15 meters (144’ 10”). Meanwhile, Seanoa finished fifth in the javelin throw with a mark of 53.07 meters (174’ 1”), while Scaffa finished 13th in the event at 43.46 meters (142’ 7”).
The third school record came in the women’s shot put, as Mandie Maddux (Gresham, Ore.) initially broke the four-year-old record on her first throw of 11.76 meters (38’ 7”), but then she improved upon that mark on her fifth throw of 11.82 meters (38’ 9.25”), and established the final mark of 11.83 meters (38’ 9.75”) on her final throw. She also finished second in the high jump after clearing 1.63 meters (5’ 4.25”) and 10th in the javelin throw at 30.68 meters (100’ 8”).
Two Redhawks picked up event victories Saturday, starting with Sophie Curatilo (Honolulu, Hawaii) in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:30.02. Rebecca Lassere (Boise, Idaho) finished second in her heat and ninth overall with a personal-best time of 4:43.23, followed by Johanna Erickson (Edgewood, Wash.) in 5:01.21 and Haley Kruell (Portland, Ore.) in 5:22.95.
The other victory came in the men’s triple jump, with Nick Redlew (Honolulu, Hawaii) finishing first with a mark of 12.89 meters (42’ 3.5”). Shaddye Melu (Auburn, Wash.) finished second in the high jump after clearing 2.06 meters (6’ 9”), and Cam Peters (Santa Clara, Calif.) tied his season best with a clearance of 1.91 meters (6’ 3.25”).
Also in the field events, Alexa DeYoung (Gig Harbor, Wash.) posted a personal best in the hammer throw at 40.27 meters (132’ 1”). Mariah Gibbs (Banks, Ore.) finished second in the triple jump with an outdoor-best mark of 11.21 meters (36’ 9.5”), followed by Katie Fleming (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) in fifth place at 10.86 meters (35’ 7.75”), Sandy Dasalla Good (Mountlake Terrace, Wash.) in a tie for eighth place at 10.44 meters (34’ 3”), and Alanna McCarthy (St. Paul, Ore.) in that same tie for eighth place with a season-best mark.
Gus Arroyo (Portland, Ore.) finished sixth in the men’s 1500 meter run with a personal-best time of 3:51.78, followed by Collin Overbay (Spokane, Wash.) in 10th place with a season-best mark of 3:55.07. Louis Rodrigues (Alameda, Calif.) won his heat of the 1500 meter run in 4:02.31, ahead of Jacques Hebert (Honolulu, Hawaii) in 4:04.59, Joseph Nakao (Sammamish, Wash.) in 4:05.21, and Miles Hille (Woodinville, Wash.) with a season-best mark of 4:12.77.
Collin Olson (Newcastle, Wash.) finished third in the men’s 5000 meter run in 15:47.51, while Lindsay Frederick (Seattle, Wash.) crossed the finish line second in the women’s 5000 meter run with a personal-best time of 18:46.83. Alisa Poplawski (Newcastle, Wash.) finished second in her heat and seventh overall in the 800 meter run in 2:15.11.
In the 200 meter dash, Austin Thummel-Gravitt (Puyallup, Wash.) finished fourth on the men’s side with a season-best time of 21.88 seconds. Mandy Rusch (Redmond, Wash.) earned a personal-best mark of 26.31 seconds to finish third in her heat, ahead of Fiona Smith (San Francisco, Calif.) with a season-best time of 27.65 seconds.
Abby Wachter (Beaverton, Ore.) posted a personal-best time of 1:05.88 in the 400 meter hurdles, finishing fifth in the event. She then joined with Madison Lichter (Snohomish, Wash.), Gibbs, and Alyssa Gonzales (Pasadena, Calif.) to finish third in the 4x100 meter relay in 48.86 seconds.
The Seattle University track and field team heads to Orem, Utah, for the 2015 Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships May 13-16.
