The Huskies plated their first two runs in the bottom of the first on back-to-back two-out singles from Brandon Berry and Alex Schmidt, scoring Matt Jackson and bringing Berry around the bases to score.
In the next inning, Washington increased their lead, 6-0, on a pair of two-run homers, first from Chris Baker before Berry’s second straight hit of the game. Joey Morgan and Braden Bishop came home on each of the two extra-base hits, respectively, after each reaching base on a walk.
Scoring the Redhawks’ first run in the top of the third, Colin Peterson (Bellingham, Wash.) scored on a single up the middle by Griffin Andreychuk (Nanaimo, B.C., Canada) but Joey Morgan would give UW a 7-1 lead in the bottom of the frame, scoring on a wild pitch.
Brock Carpenter (Milton, Wash.) crushed a three-run homer to left center to cut the Seattle U deficit, 7-4, in the top of the fourth and bring in Grant Newton (Bend, Ore.) and Brian Olson (Black Diamond, Wash.), who reached base on back-to-back singles. Schmidt hit a solo homer, the combined fourth of the game, to right field with one out in the bottom of the inning before scoring in the sixth on an SU fielding error to increase UW’s lead back to five, 9-4.
Carpenter scored on a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth to draw the Redhawks within four, 9-5, but the Huskies would pick up a final out to earn the win.
Reliever Spencer Jones picked up the win for Washington while starter Nick Meservey (Scottsdale, Ariz.) suffered the loss for the Redhawks, whose seven game winning streak was snapped with the loss.
Seattle U returns to action tomorrow night, hosting University of Puget Sound on Wednesday, Apr. 15 at Bannerwood Park at 7:15 p.m. The Redhawks host North Dakota this weekend for a three-game Western Athletic Conference series, looking to defend and extend their 10-game league winning streak.
