Brock Carpenter (Milton, Wash.) reached base on an infield single to lead off the second inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Dalton Hurd (Bend, Ore.) singled to put runners on the corners and then stole second, followed by a single by Colin Peterson (Bellingham, Wash.) that scored Carpenter. With two outs, Griffin Andreychuk (Nanaimo, B.C.) laced a double into the left-center field gap, scoring Hurd and Peterson to give the Redhawks a 3-0 lead.
Grant Newton (Bend, Ore.) tripled in the third inning and scored on a single by Carpenter, and then Andreychuk hit another double in the fourth inning to the same spot as his previous hit, and he came around to score on a single by Sheldon Stober (Kent, Wash.) that made the score 5-0.
In the sixth inning, Brian Olson (Black Diamond, Wash.) led off with a double and eventually scored on a single by Carpenter. The Redhawks completed their scoring in the seventh inning as Andreychuk came in to score on a single through the right side of the infield by Newton.
Tarik Skubal (Kingman, Ariz.) picked up his first career collegiate victory, allowing just three hits and three walks in six innings of work. He threw 103 pitches, 66 of them for strikes, as he collected eight strikeouts during the day. Grant Gunning (Snohomish, Wash.) gave up just one walk in 1 1/3 innings of relief, while Nick Meservey (Scottsdale, Ariz.) struck out the only two batters he faced.
Utah Valley (5-18, 1-2 WAC) broke up the shutout bid in the ninth inning when Spencer Gothberg drove in Mark Krueger with a single through the right side of the infield. Redhawk reliever Kyle Doyle (Covington, Wash.) struck out the side in the ninth inning as Seattle U pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts against the Wolverines.
Andreychuk led the Redhawk offense by going 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI, reaching base in all five plate appearances, while Carpenter went 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. Seattle U finished with 15 hits in the game, nine of them given up by Utah Valley starter Kaden Schmitt, who took the loss after allowing five runs in 3 2/3 innings of work.
Seattle University (9-14, 2-1 WAC) hits the road for its first significant trip of the season, heading to Edinburg, Texas to face Texas-Pan American next weekend in a three-game WAC series, starting Friday, March 27, at 7 p.m. local time (5 p.m. Pacific Time).
