Another Seattle University indoor track and field record was broken over the weekend as the Redhawks competed at the UW Invitational Friday and Saturday at the Dempsey Indoor Facility.
Alisa Poplawski (Newcastle, Wash.) etched her name into the Seattle U record book, posting a time of 2:16.89 in the women’s 800 meter run, 21/100ths of a second quicker than the previous record set at this meet two years ago by Madison Davis (Camano Island, Wash.). Davis also competed in the 800 meter run Saturday, finishing with a time of 2:18.96.
Shaddye Melu (Auburn, Wash.) came close to breaking another record, finishing second in the 400 meter dash in 48.28 seconds, just 3/100ths of a second off the mark he currently holds. He also finished in a tie for fourth place in the men’s high jump, clearing 2.05 meters (6’ 8.75”), while Cam Peters (Santa Clara, Calif.) was able to clear 1.85 meters (6’ 0.75”).
Mandie Maddux (Gresham, Ore.) posted personal best marks in the 60 meter hurdles, long jump, and 800 meter run to compile a career-high 3,201 points in the indoor pentathlon, good enough for ninth place. She started the day with a time of 9.73 seconds in the 60 meter hurdles, followed by a clearance of 1.58 meters (5’ 2.25”) in the high jump and a top effort of 10.68 meters (35’ 0.5”) in the shot put. Maddux would then earn a mark of 4.73 meters (15’ 6.25”) in the long jump before finishing the day by completing the 800 meter run in 2:32.26.
Sophie Curatilo (Honolulu, Hawaii) won her section of the women’s 5000 meter run, finishing in eighth place overall with a time of 17:14.94. Joe Charbonneau (Bellingham, Wash.) posted a similar performance in the men’s 5000 meter run, finishing first in his section and 11th overall in the event with a time of 14:54.25.
Gus Arroyo (Portland, Ore.) finished third in his section in the men’s one mile run with a personal collegiate-best time of 4:15.39. Candice de Sauvage (Foster City, Calif.) won her heat of the women’s 400 meter dash, finishing in 19th place overall with a time of 58.84 seconds.
Both distance medley relay teams finished 11th in their respective events, starting with the women’s quartet of Davis, Katie Fleming (Paradise Valley, Ariz.), Rebecca Lassere (Boise, Idaho), and Moira O’Connor Lenth (Seattle, Wash.) with a time of 12:25.41. The men’s relay squad of Chay Weaver (Louisville, Colo.), Jason Cowan (Renton, Wash.), Joseph Nakao (Sammamish, Wash.), and Jacques Hebert (Honolulu, Hawaii) posted a time of 10:27.43.
Austin Thummel-Gravitt (Puyallup, Wash.) finished fourth in his heat and 15th overall in the men’s 200 meter dash with a time of 22.80 seconds. Malaki Seanoa (Everett, Wash.) was the top Redhawk finisher in the men’s weight throw, finishing 19th overall with a top effort of 14.06 meters (46’ 1.5”), the best mark he has posted while at Seattle U.
Mariah Gibbs (Banks, Ore.) finished third in her heat and 15th overall in the 60 meter hurdles preliminaries with a personal collegiate-best time of 9.36 seconds. In the preliminaries of the 60 meter dash, Madison Lichter (Snohomish, Wash.) posted a time of 8.07 seconds, and Alyssa Gonzales (Pasadena, Calif.) completed the sprint in 8.15 seconds.
The Seattle University track and field team returns to Dempsey Indoor in two weeks for the Husky Classic Feb. 13-14.
