Seattle University men’s soccer (5-4-1, 0-1-1 WAC) scored a goal in the late first half, but it was not enough to overcome the earlier deficit as UNLV (8-2-1, 2-0-0 WAC) came away with the 3-1 win in Western Athletic Conference play.

“I give kudos to UNLV, they did a good job,” said head coach Pete Fewing. “They scored three goals in the first half. We were not sharp in the beginning and came out sluggish. Our second half was better but we need to execute as far as completing passes and getting on the other end of crosses. We hit balls towards the box but not with enough quality or danger.”

After UNLV’s Danny Musovski gave the Rebels a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute, heading it in off a free kick by Julian Portugal, Brady Ballew’s (Marysville, Wash.) shot in the 18th minute was one of the Redhawks’ best chances to equalize the score, but it sailed barely wide.

Rodrigo Fuentes put UNLV ahead, 2-0, in the 31st minute on a slow rolling ball that went just inside the net near the crossbar before Musovski scored his second of the match to take a 3-0 lead just two minutes later on a breakaway.

Seattle U’s Alex Roldan (Pico Rivera, Calif.) narrowed the deficit, chipping the ball in off a free kick by Kyle Bjornethun (Snohomish, Wash.) just before halftime in the 43rd minute.

Race Sciabica’s (Bellevue, Wash.) shot, which hit off the crossbar in the 68th minute, was the Redhawks’ best chance to continue the comeback, but fell short.

In goal, Shane Haworth (Puyallup, Wash.) and Ryan Harding each made three saves, as Harding picked up the win. Roldan led SU with five shots, two on goal while UNLV’s Musovski led all players on the field with six shots, three on goal.

Seattle U returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 12 to close out the weekend hosting Grand Canyon at 1:30 p.m. on the WAC Digital Network. The women’s soccer team hosts Bakersfield at 11 a.m. in the first game of the doubleheader.
