A big doubles win by Kosanke/Clare as well as Kosanke and Newman advancing to singles quarterfinals highlighted day one.

Seattle University men’s tennis completed day one of the Dar Walters Tennis Classic hosted by Boise State, a day highlighted by a big doubles win by Zack Kosanke (Bellevue, Wash.) and Ian Clare (Sachse, Texas). Kosanke and Riley Newman (Whidbey Island, Wash.) also advanced to Saturday’s quarterfinals in singles play.

In the Blue Draw singles bracket, Montana’s Andrew Warren advanced over Jason Bediones (Kent, Wash.), 6-1, 6-0. In the same bracket, Kevin Lynch (Colorado Springs, Colo.) fell to Weber State’s Sanjay Goswami, 6-4, 6-4, and Brandon Schneider (Dubuque, Iowa) was defeated by Idaho State’s Daniel Loebel, 6-0, 6-2. Bediones, Lynch, and Schneider will compete again in Saturday’s consolation bracket.

Kosanke advanced to Saturday’s quarterfinals with wins over Lewis-Clark State’s Andrew Bustani (6-1, 6-1) and Idaho State’s Jamey Swiggert (7-5, 7-5).

In Orange Draw singles, Connor Leahy (Portland, Ore.) advanced to the round of 16 over Lewis-Clark State’s Anthony Croteau, 6-3, 6-2, but fell to Montana’s Peter Mimnagh-Fleming, 6-3, 7-6. In the same bracket, Newman advanced to Saturday’s quarterfinals with wins over Weber State’s Ryan Garner, 6-4, 6-4, and Idaho State’s Bjorn Scheepbouwer, 6-1, 6-4. Clare was defeated in the first round by Montana’s Zach Drost, 7-5, 6-1, and will face Washington State’s Dylan Hansel in Saturday’s consolation bracket.

In Blue Doubles action, Kosanke/Clare advanced by defeating Boise State’s Toby Mitchell/Abe Hewko, 8-6, in one of the biggest wins since the rebirth of the Seattle U tennis program. Lynch/Bediones fell to Idaho’s Andrew Zedde/Matt Oddonetto, 8-4.

In Orange Doubles, Newman/Leahy advanced over Idaho’s Sam Laudon/Filip Fichtel, 8-5, before Schneider paired with Montana’s Eric Braun and fell to Weber State’s Ryan Garner/Landon Barlow, 8-5.

The Redhawks return to action on Saturday and Sunday to complete their final tournament of the fall season.
