Head coach Pete Fewing, in the second season of his second era as head coach, and 20th season at Seattle U overall, will lead the Redhawks in 2013.
“Our 2013 schedule is very demanding and we look forward to each game,” said Fewing. “We love to travel as a team, so road games are a tremendous opportunity for our men. I am pleased we have a full [slate of] 20 [regular season] games, as it will provide us the greatest opportunity to improve the squad. We cannot wait to get started.”
GOALKEEPERS
Led by senior goalkeeper Jake Feener (Rocklin, Calif.) and junior Shane Haworth (Puyallup, Wash.), the Redhawk goalkeepers will have a strong sense of upperclassmen leadership. Feener and Haworth split time in goal last season, as Feener made 11 starts to Haworth’s six. Feener also led the goalkeeping staff with 63 saves and two shutouts.
Redshirt freshman Patrick Clifford (Albuquerque, N.M.) will look to make contributions and record his first collegiate minutes in goal this season.
DEFENDERS
Upperclassmen Bobby Segal (Portland, Ore.) and Chase Hanson (Kent, Wash.) will lead the Redhawk back line with the help of Jose Merlo (San Marcos, Calif.), who started 10 games as a freshman in 2012. The three veterans helped contribute in two shutouts last season. SU also adds three freshmen to the defensive line – Kyle Bjornethun (Snohomish, Wash.), Josh Gerhke (Des Moines, Wash.), and Brandon Marquez (Las Cruces, N.M.).
MIDFIELDERS
Junior Kyle Silva (Winnipeg, Manitoba) and sophomores Austin Sweeney (Federal Way, Wash.) and Michael Roberts (Issaquah, Wash.) will lead the Redhawk midfield as they made a combined 33 starts last season, with Roberts and Sweeney each contributing a goal and two shots in 2012.
Redshirt sophomore Ian Hines-Ike (Littleton, Colo.) and redshirt freshman Jordan Bingham (Ontario, Calif.) will look for their first collegiate minutes in 2013 alongside newcomers Darrell Hannah (Nelson, New Zealand), Tristan Medios-Simon (Honolulu, Hawaii), Cameron Rohani (Cartersville, Ga.), and Jonathan Massimino (San Ramon, Calif.).
FORWARDS
The Seattle U forwards will be the position with the most collegiate experience, as a trio of seniors – Renato Bandeira (Sammamish, Wash.), Miguel Gonzalez (Yelm, Wash.), and Race Sciabica (Bellevue, Wash.) and one redshirt junior – Brady Ballew (Marysville, Wash.) – will lead the team at this position.
Gonzalez led Seattle U with four goals in 2012, also recording one assist and a team-high nine points. Sophomore Hamza Haddadi (Shoreline, Wash.) and Ballew ranked second on the team last season with three goals, two assists, and eight points apiece.
Redshirt freshman Jeff Rose (Carmichael, Calif.) and newcomers Shane Mahvi (San Diego, Calif.), Grant Fremmerlid (Maple Valley, Wash.), and Justice Duerksen (San Clemente, Calif.) will look to make contributions on the SU front line in their first minutes in Redhawk uniform.
SCHEDULE
The Redhawks will open up the regular season with their first six games away from home, two on the east coast, two in California, and two in Oregon. They will host a pair of southeastern schools – Georgia State and Florida Gulf Coast – on Sept. 20 and 22 in their opening weekend at home. Another home match to highlight is Tuesday, Oct. 8 as they are set to host cross-town rival Washington. They will face their first WAC opponent on Sunday, Oct. 5 at San Jose State and will host their first WAC game vs. UNLV on Friday, Oct. 11. This year’s senior class will be honored in their final home game in Seattle U uniform on Saturday, Nov. 9 vs. San Jose State. The team will then compete in their first WAC Tournament from Nov. 14-17, with the winner earning a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
PRESEASON WAC POLL
In a recent vote of the league’s eight men’s soccer head coaches, the Redhawks were chosen to finish sixth in Western Athletic Conference play in 2013.
Seattle U also placed two student-athletes on the Preseason All-WAC Team – senior forward Miguel Gonzalez and senior goalkeeper Jake Feener.
WAC newcomer Bakersfield was chosen as the favorite to win the 2013 WAC men’s soccer title, receiving five first place votes. The 2012 MPSF champion, Air Force, finished second, receiving two first place votes.
UNLV, San Jose State, and Kansas City rounded out the top five, with Grand Canyon and Houston Baptist grabbing the final two spots.
Also, as chosen by College Sports Madness, four Redhawks were named to the Preseason All-Conference Teams. Miguel Gonzalez and Kyle Silva were named to the First Team while Hamza Haddadi and Austin Sweeney were named to the Second Team.
