The Seattle University men’s tennis team played their second conference match of the dual season Friday, falling 5-1 to Denver at the Gates Tennis Center in Denver, Colo.

The Redhawks claimed their sole point in singles play as Flavio Malagutti (Rio Claro, Brazil) continued his hot streak with a two-set victory at No. 6 singles. He won a tight first set by a score of 7-5, and then took the second after winning a tiebreak 7-4. The 7-5, 7-6(7-4) victory over Fredrick Bjorne gave Malagutti his third singles victory in four matches.

No other Redhawk won a set in singles play. At No. 2 singles, Kevin Lynch (Colorado Springs, Colo.) claimed five games in all, but lost to the Pioneers’ Max Krammer 6-2, 6-3. Kyle Rapp (Encinitas, Calif.) also won five games in his fourth-position match, but was unable to complete the match against Fabio Biasion. That contest was at 6-4, 2-1 in favor of Biasion when it was halted.

In doubles play, the Redhawks lost the two matches that were able to finish. At No. 2 doubles, Zach Kosanke (Bellevue, Wash.) and Ian Clare (Sachse, Texas) lost to Biasion and Alex Clinkenbeard 8-2, while Rapp and Malagutti fell to Luke Manley and Henry Craig 8-1 at No. 3 doubles. The first doubles match, which saw Lynch and Jason Bediones (Kent, Wash.) take on Krammer and Enej Bonin, was ended at 5-5 when the other two matches finished, clinching the doubles point for the Pioneers.

Seattle U (1-17, 0-2 WAC) will now head to Arlington, Texas, for another conference match, this time a showdown with the UT Arlington Mavericks. That matchup is slated for a 9:00 a.m. Pacific start on Sunday, April 7 at the UTA Tennis Center.
