Despite winning the doubles point, the Seattle University men’s tennis team lost their Western Athletic Conference matchup with New Mexico State Friday, dropping a 6-1 decision in Logan, Utah.

The Redhawks took the doubles point by virtue of winning two doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles, Kevin Lynch (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Jason Bediones (Kent, Wash.) won their fifth doubles match of the dual season, taking down NM State’s Luis Ramirez and Marc Westgate 9-7. In the second doubles match, Zach Kosanke (Bellevue, Wash.) and Ian Clare (Sachse, Texas) won their second match as doubles partners, taking down Germain Degardin and Yannick Blank 8-6.

The Redhawks couldn’t complete the doubles sweep, however, as Flavio Malagutti (Rio Claro, Brazil) and Kyle Rapp (Encinitas, Calif.) fell to the Aggies’ Daniel Fernandez and Paul Denele 8-5 in the third doubles position.

Despite taking a 1-0 lead from the doubles competition, Seattle U couldn’t muster anymore points after dropping all six singles contests in straight sets. The closest singles matches came at both No. 2 and No. 3 singles, where Kosanke and Clare each lost 7-5, 6-3 matches to Fernandez and Westgate, respectively. Bediones managed to win six games over two sets, but lost 6-4, 6-2 to Denele at No. 5 singles, and both Lynch and Rapp took four games in two sets from their opponents. Lynch lost 6-3, 6-1 to Ramirez atop the singles lineup, while Rapp fell 6-1, 6-3 to Degardin at No. 5 singles.

Rounding out the Redhawks’ lineup, Malagutti squared off against Patrick Pfister at No. 6 singles, falling 6-2, 6-0.

Seattle University (1-20, 0-5 WAC) will next head to Pocatello, Idaho, for a non-conference match at Idaho State. That match will be played Sunday, April 14, with an 8:00 a.m. Pacific (9:00 a.m. local) start.
