The Seattle University men’s swim team picked up more academic honors, as 10 Redhawks were named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) All-Academic Scholar-Athletes, announced Monday evening by conference executive director Al Beaird.

Seniors Tyler Carriker (Everett, Wash.), James Gilmore (Eugene, Ore.), Chris Lynch (Mukilteo, Wash.), and Joe Wertz (Richland, Wash.) each received the academic honor for the third consecutive year. Juniors Ali Abadi (Edmonds, Wash.), Nicolas Morrell (Bend, Ore.), Douglas Pizac (Salt Lake City, Utah), and Kieran Schaefer (Sweet Home, Ore.) were recognized for the second straight time. Sophomore Kyle Moline (Mercer Island, Wash.) and redshirt freshman Damon Perry (Sammamish, Wash.) were recognized for the first time in their careers.

“I’m proud of these young men for earning this honor,” Seattle U head coach Craig Nisgor said. “The entire swim program understands that academics are of upmost importance here, and this is another example of our swimmers proving that they value their academic performance as much as, if not more than, their athletic accomplishments.”

In order to receive MPSF All-Academic recognition, student-athletes needed to have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher, must be at least a sophomore academically, must have competed one full academic year at the institution prior to the current season, and must have competed in at least 50 percent of the institution’s competitions.

Seattle University had the third-most honorees among the MPSF schools, behind only the University of Denver (20) and BYU (14). In total, 82 student-athletes from 10 different schools (Air Force, BYU, CSU Bakersfield, Denver, Hawaii, North Dakota, Pacific, Seattle U, UNLV, Wyoming) received the academic recognition from the conference office.

The Seattle University men’s swim team set four new school records during the 2012-13 season.
