The Seattle University men's tennis team saw a tough first day of the Pacific Northwest Intercollegiates Friday, winning two matches at the Nordstrom Center in Seattle.

Zach Kosanke (Bellevue, Wash.) claimed one of the Redhawks' wins, taking down Eastern Washington's Joseph Cohen in a close first-round match in the Pacific Singles bracket, the top singles contest at the tournament. Kosanke beat Cohen in straight sets, but was forced to win seven games in both sets before winning 7-5, 7-5. He moved on to face second-seeded Robin Cambier of Oregon in the Round of 16, but fell 6-2, 6-0 to see his main bracket run end.

Also playing in the Pacific bracket, Will Topp (Olympia, Wash.) lost to Portland's Michael Hukwo 6-3, 6-1, Kevin Lynch (Colorado Springs, Colo.) fell to Gonzaga's Alvaro Nazal, the bracket's fourth-seeded player, 6-3, 6-1, and Flavio Malagutti (Rio Claro, Brazil) lost 6-0, 6-1 to Washington's Marton Bots, the No. 3 seed in the bracket. Topp, Lynch, and Malagutti will next take part in the Pacific bracket's consolation round starting at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.

The other SU victory on the day came in the Pacific Doubles bracket, the tournament's bracket for the best doubles teams. The Seattle U duo of Topp and Kosanke advanced into the bracket's second round, eliminating Portland State's Marx and Mishra after the Vikings' pair did not begin the match. Kosanke and Topp will face the second-seeded team from Washington, Egger and Manthou, in Saturday's second round. Also in the bracket, Lynch and Jason Bediones (Kent, Wash.) lost 8-4 to Eastern Washington's Cohen and Martinez in the first round.

In the Northwest Singles bracket, the Redhawks lost all four singles matches. Kyle Rapp (Encinitas, Calif.) fell in a two-set contest to Eastern Washington's Stefan Farrar 6-3, 6-2, and Bediones fell 6-0, 6-2 to Brent Chin from Oregon. Gus Orlando (Sacramento, Calif.) took a game against No. 3 seed Justin Guay of Portland before losing 6-1, 6-0, while Ian Clare (Sachse, Texas) lost 6-0, 6-0 to Kent Andreason, also of Portland.

In the Northwest Doubles bracket, the SU duo of Malagutti and Rapp lost 8-4 to Portland State's Bechmann and Risenhoover while Clare and Orlando lost 8-2 to the third-seeded Jamin and Mijatovic of Gonzaga.
