The Seattle University track and field team began its second weekend of competition with some solid results as the first session of the UW Invitational took place Friday evening at Dempsey Indoor.

Matthew McClement (Bellingham, Wash.) earned a seventh-place finish in the men's 5000 meter run, crossing the finish line with a time of 15:18.82. Michael Van Nuland (Newcastle, Wash.) finished in ninth place with a time of 15:26.00, followed by Adam Kollgaard (Kent, Wash.) in 12th place in 15:38.09, Graham Kinzel-Grubbs (Portland, Ore.) in 14th place in 15:51.73, and Kevin Kopetz (Derry, N.H.) in 15th place in 16:10.44. In the women's 5000 meter run, Lauren Hammerle (Seattle, Wash.) crossed the finish line in 12th place in 18:29.73, while Hannah Mittelstaedt (Maple Valley, Wash.) finished in 13th place in 18:40.22.

Both distance medley relay teams earned 12th-place finishes, starting with the women's quartet of Jennifer Stolle (Seattle, Wash.), Noelle Marchesini (Gig Harbor, Wash.), Cara Talty (Raritan, N.J.), and Sarah Bolce (Sacramento, Calif.) posting a time of 12:58.48. The men's relay team of Kelton Sears (Maple Valley, Wash.), Keenan Clinch (Sammamish, Wash.), Cooper Hartman (Silverdale, Wash.), and Peter VanNuland (Newcastle, Wash.) combined for a final time of 10:46.93.

Ariel Johnson (Moscow, Idaho) cleared a height of 3.20 meters (10'6") in the first flight of the women's pole vault to currently place in a tie for 17th place. Kaytie Bateman (Chehalis, Wash.) ended the night in 19th place in the women's pentathlon with 2,594 points after finishing the 60 meter hurdles in 10.41 seconds, clearing a height of 1.41 meters (4'7.5") in the high jump, posting a top toss of 8.13 meters (26'8.25") in the shot put, leaping 4.61 meters (15'1.5") in the long jump, and finishing the 800 meter run with a time of 2:40.27.

The UW Invitational will continue Saturday, Jan. 29, with action throughout the day. Seattle University's participation will begin at 9 a.m. with the preliminaries of the women's 60 meter hurdles and will proceed until the men's 4x400 meter relay at 6:30 p.m.
