Seattle University head swimming coach Craig Mallery has announced the members of the 2009 recruiting class that have committed to attending the university and to joining the varsity swim program beginning in the 2009-10 academic year.
“Our incoming men’s and women’s classes enhance our existing culture of well-rounded excellence as both outstanding scholars and athletes. Athletically, the recruited class will provide stronger leadership in diverse events while enriching our depth. We continue to be better positioned for an impact on the Division I level,” Mallery said.
Briley Boggs (Federal Way, Wash.) is a 5’2” swimmer out of Decatur High School. Tyler Carriker (Everett, Wash.) helped Kamiak High School win the 4A state championship this year by finishing second in the 50 freestyle, third in the 100 freestyle, and first in both the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay.
James Gilmore (Eugene, Ore.) holds the records at South Eugene High School individually in the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle and also as part of the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay quartets. Kalani Michael Kaula (Albuquerque, N.M.) helped Albuquerque Academy win back-to-back state titles by finishing first in the 100 freestyle both years, as well as helping to set state records in the 200 freestyle relay, 200 medley relay, and 400 freestyle relay over the past two years.
Megan Kelley (Las Vegas, Nev.), a member of the Clark County Sandpipers for the past seven years, was the state and regional champion in the 100 butterfly this past season. Rachel Leighter (Eugene, Ore.) was the co-captain of the Henry D. Sheldon High School swim team, qualifying for the state championships all four years and advancing to Junior Nationals in March 2009.
Chris Lynch (Melbourne, Australia) is a 6’1” swimmer who posted a top time of 59.34 seconds in the 100 breaststroke during his career at Kamiak High School. Marina Pomar-Enders (Mill Creek, Wash.) is a distance freestyle swimmer who helped Henry M. Jackson High School win the state championships this past season by participating in both winning relay squads.
Shelby Remillard (Colorado Springs, Colo.) finished in the top 16 in both the 100 butterfly and the 200 individual medley at the state championships this season while competing for Cheyenne Mountain High School. Kevlyn Richards (Gig Harbor, Wash.) was the team captain at Bellarmine Prep and helped set the school record in the 200 medley relay.
Megan Robinson (Salt Lake City, Utah) has been a consistent top ten performer at the state championships in the 100 butterfly and 200 individual medley for Skyline High School. Joe Wertz (Richland, Wash.) was a four-time team MVP and three-time league swimmer of the year at Hanford High School.
The Seattle University swim teams join the rest of the athletic department in entering Year Two of the reclassification process towards full Division I membership. The swim programs will continue to compete in the Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference but will follow Division I rules beginning in the 2009-10 academic year.
