SU Swim Teams Among Top Finishers at PCSC Relay Meet

The Seattle University men's swim team won two races and finished in a tie for second, while the women's team continually placed in the top five throughout the day and finished fourth overall Saturday at the PCSC Relay Meet held at the Cal Baptist Swim Complex.

The men’s swim team won two races and finished in a tie for second, while the women’s team continually placed in the top five throughout the day and finished fourth overall Saturday at the PCSC Relay Meet held at the Cal Baptist Swim Complex.

The team of Gordon Smith (, ), Bryant Bevers ( Way, ), Nathan Freeman (, ), and Chris Coley () won the 800 freestyle relay by over six seconds, finishing in a time of 7:05.98. Doug Djang () joined Bevers, Freeman, and Smith to win the 500 freestyle relay with a time of 4:15.91, almost three seconds better that Cal State Bakersfield.

The Redhawk men finished the meet with two second place finishes, as the quartet of Djang, Coley, Michael Wheeler (, ), and Bryson Chiu () swam the 400 medley relay in a time of 3:47.92, seven seconds behind Cal Baptist’s top squad. Bevers, Freeman, Andrew Martinez (), and Smith finished second in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:15.27. Overall the men earned 157 points, tied with Cal State Bakersfield and behind Cal Baptist, who won the men’s team competition with 257 points.

The best finish for the women came in the 1500 freestyle relay, as Christina Hunsberger (, ), Alison Colnon (, ), and Kelsey Henan () placed second with a time of 16:13.45, ahead of Cal Baptist, Alaska Fairbanks, and Loyola Marymount. The women closed out the meet with a strong fourth place finish in the 400 freestyle relay, as Francesca Reale (, ), Megan Lavin (, ), , and Colnon completed the race in 3:43.85, just 3/100ths of a second behind Cal Baptist.

Two relay squads did finish in third place, starting with the 300 backstroke relay team of Reale, Carole Triem (), and Hunsberger, who swam the race in 3:08.81. The 400 medley relay team of , , Alex Weiss (, ), and Elizabeth Hanohano () also finished third with a time of 4:09.12. The women finished in fourth place in the team competition with 121 points, behind Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount, and Cal Baptist, but ahead of Cal State Bakersfield and Alaska Fairbanks.

The women’s swim team will begin its home season Thursday, Oct. 18, by facing Loyola Marymount beginning at 4 p.m. at the pool. The men will join the women for a meet against and Simon Fraser Saturday, Oct. 20, beginning at 1 p.m., also at the .
